Acura MDX Prototype is ready for production

Acura has pulled the curtain on the MDX Prototype, a very production-ready-looking show car that shows almost one on one how the new MDX is designed.

After a bunch of teasers, Acura has presented the MDX Prototype. Acura is more than happy to stick the word ‘Prototype’ behind a 99 percent production-ready show car and that means that American SUV enthusiasts should take a good look at this MDX Prototype. Add some MDX badges and you have the completely new fourth generation of the MDX.

All generations of Acura MDX

The MDX is a completely unknown car in the Netherlands, as Acura has never been active on our market. Still, the MDX has been around for some time. The first generation was already introduced on the North American market in 2000 and after twenty years the fourth series of the MDX is on the way. The big brother of the RDX, also unknown here, is a seven-seater SUV with three rows of seats that is technically closely related to the Honda Pilot. The new MDX is topped with Acura’s latest design language, a design style that was previously poured out over the TLX and the aforementioned RDX. The new SUV gets a pronounced front with flat headlamps, a wide grille and sporty-looking vertical ‘cooling vents’. The shape of the rear lights is that of the front ones and are therefore just as sleek. At the bottom of the buttocks a relatively sporty designed rear bumper with an exhaust tailpipe on both sides.

Acura does not release extensive technical specifications yet, it is still too early for that. The brand does say that the wheelbase has grown by 7.5 centimeters to 2.9 meters. Acura puts the MDX on the market as a sporty SUV and therefore emphasizes that the cabin is placed further back, so that you are more than 5.5 centimeters further from the front axle in the front of the MDX than before. The MDX mounted on 21-inch alloy should also be a bit wider than the outgoing model. The interior is very similar to that of the TLX, which was renewed mid-year. The dashboard has a high center tunnel and a 12.3-inch wide infotainment screen placed on top of the dashboard, but slightly recessed into it. The whole has a both luxurious and sporty appearance. The counter is also fully digital. Here we also see a 12.3-inch large screen. As far as engines are concerned, the information is also quite limited. The MDX will in any case be available with two motors. There will be a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 that is linked to a ten-speed automatic transmission and a blown 3.0 V6 intended for the sporty Type S version, which is 360 hp and 480 Nm powerful. Both versions are four-wheel drive.

Anyone who gets excited about this concrete MDX outlook should be disappointed. The MDX is once again not coming to Europe.
