All about Windows Explorer and metadata

It is useful that you can link extra information to certain files so that you can find them more easily later. The good news is that you don’t need a third-party program for this. You can add, remove and find all that metadata in Windows Explorer.

Detailed information

You want to attach a star rating or copyright info to a photo, or add the composer’s name to a music file. Or would you like to arrange all Word files in a folder by language or by the number of words? Everything can go in Windows scout. Metadata is added data that provides additional information about a file. Exif data (exchangeable image file format) is a specification for metadata that is stored invisibly in digital photo files. To read that information, right-click on the file or on a selection of files in Windows Explorer. In the context menu choose Properties and then select the tab Details. At a Becomedocument you can read here, among other things, the author, the creation date of the document and the number of pages. Images include camera model, exposure time, and so on…

You read the author of the text and who did the revision.

remove

Much of this information can be edited by clicking and typing in the box. Because it often concerns personal information, it is possible to delete all detailed data at once via the link Delete properties and personal data. Maybe you don’t want people to be able to read the location data of your photos in the exif data. Optionally, select multiple files at once to clean them in one go.

You can delete the personal data in the Properties.

Add Columns

You can easily display this EXIF data in columns. In this way it is possible in Explorer, for example, to arrange photos by star rating. The problem is that by default the columns for this metadata are hidden. How do you get it out? Open the folder with the images you want to view and activate in the tab Statue the display Details. In this view, use the button at the top Add Columns. Normally there are the options Date, Type, Size and Labels enabled, but if you click on Choose Columns, you’ll be presented with a long list of meta criteria that you can check. Select the desired details (for example Appreciation) and click OK. This will cause a new column for this data to appear in Explorer.

From now on you will see the column with the star ratings in Explorer.
