Amazon orders 1,800 Mercedes electric buses

Mercedes-Benz has received a large order from Amazon: the American giant wants 1,800 electric buses to deliver orders in Europe.

It concerns 1,200 electric Sprinters and 600 more compact eVitos. Mercedes-Benz has to work hard, because the majority of the electric buses will already be put into use this year.

The vast majority of the vans are intended for the German and British markets. Eight hundred vans will end up with our eastern neighbors, five hundred are intended for British roads. How many eSprinters or eVitos are intended for the Dutch market is not yet known.

Amazon CEO Bezos says he is pleased that Daimler is part of “the drive to build the most sustainable transport fleet in the world.” The new fleet should contribute to Amazon’s goal of being climate neutral by 2040. Although the investment in Mercedes vans is now is substantial, it pales into insignificance compared to the investment Amazon previously made with another car manufacturer. At the beginning of 2019, it was announced that start-up Rivian Automotive would receive an order for 100,000 vans. could get started with the development of electric vehicles.
