The Kalb in the Q-stable gets an update, at least a small one. The Q2, Audi’s smallest SUV, will be a little more modern and 1,200 euros more expensive at the end of 2020. Audi uses new engines, submits assistants and adjusts the chassis. Otherwise, the main focus is on new functions: the Q2 now has optional matrix LED headlights and drives more autonomously than before. In addition, its diesel engines are cleaner.

The Audi Q2 Facelift (2020) in brief

  • Audi Q2 facelift with new aprons and LED headlights
  • New, cleaner diesel engines
  • New all-wheel drive system saves weight
  • More assistance systems
  • Base price Audi Q2 Facelift: approx. 25,000 euros
  • Market opening: September 2020

Old operating logic in the new Audi Q2 (2020)

When the Q2 kicks off in 2016, it finds an interesting niche. Small SUV models already exist. But only a few are available with all-wheel drive, hardly any comes from one of the so-called premium manufacturers. Only the Mini Countryman (since 2010) and the DS 3 Crossback (since 2018, only front-wheel drive) compete directly with the Audi Q2. The BMW X2 with a similar claim is bigger.

One of the priorities of the expensive mini SUVs is: Lifestyle. Size is less important. After the facelift, the Q2 will be shorter than the classic compact. New aprons at the front and back stretch it a few millimeters to 4.21 meters. Width (1.79 m) and height (1.54 m) remain the same. The Q2 is not a car for families, there is too little space in the rear and trunk. It is better suited to singles who see the back seat as a shelf and only occasionally occupy it with people. Look comes before cargo space. That’s why Audi dares its own design with a distinctive sideline in the Q2.

Little changes in terms of optics. Experts recognize new aprons on the Q2 facelift. The Q2 hides its tailpipes at the back. At the front it has new lamps with a different light design, always with LED technology, optionally with a matrix function that does not dazzle oncoming traffic. Audi is modernizing the inside of the air vents and gear lever.

When it comes to infotainment, Audi is keeping the old operating philosophy in the Q2. Other models (A4, A5, Q5, Q7) have been equipped with a modern touch system since their facelift. The Q2 only gets this when the generation changes. The reason: The “product upgrade” (Audi jargon) is smaller overall on the Q2. There is no budget left for a new infotainment architecture, although almost all other models have long been on the road with the next generation. Not bad, because experience has shown that operation with the rotary push button on the center console works perfectly.

Audi Q2 Facelift: New Diesel, New All-Wheel Drive

More happens in the engine compartment of the Q2, at least on the diesel side. Two new engines with a displacement of 2.0 liters replace the old units (displacement of 1.6 and 2.0 liters respectively). They come from the current drive generation (internal: EA 288 Evo) and clean their exhaust gases with two SCR catalytic converters. They convert a large part of the harmful nitrogen oxides into harmless chemicals. The output levels 30 TDI and 35 TDI with 116 and 150 hp remain.

The Q2 gets new diesel engines: the diesel engines with a displacement of 2.0 liters produce 116 or 150 hp

The gasoline engine is taken over by the Audi Q2 from the expiring model year. Initially, Audi wants to offer the SUV only as a Q2 35 TFSI with a 1.5-liter turbo engine. It makes 150 hp and transmits its power to the front axle via a manual six-speed gearbox or a seven-speed automatic (S Tronic). An entry-level petrol engine with three cylinders and 116 PS (Q2 30 TFSI) and the Audi Q2 40 TFSI with a 2.0-liter petrol engine and 190 PS will follow later. The sport version SQ2 (last: 300 PS) is sufficient for Audi.

The large engines (Q2 40 TFSI, Q2 35 TDI, SQ2) are coupled by the Ingolstadt-based company with a new all-wheel drive. The basic principle does not change: the transmission primarily directs the power to the front axle. If the wheels spin, a multi-plate clutch closes and connects to the rear axle. The drive comes from the sixth Haldex generation and saves a kilogram of weight compared to its predecessor. In addition, it can be controlled more sensitively, so the driving behavior of the Q2 Quattro should improve.

Audi Q2 Facelift (2020): Market launch and prices

The most important assistance systems have been in the Q2 since its premiere. It warns of impending accidents as standard, and optionally it helps with parking and driving. In the Q2 facelift, Audi is improving the interaction of distance cruise control, lane assistants and traffic sign recognition. The SUV should now drive largely independently: It maintains speed, distance and stays in the middle of the lane. So far, the Q2 has been oscillating between the lane markings. Both before and after the facelift, the driver is responsible.

The Audi Q2 35 TFSI will hit dealerships in September 2020 for 27,196.64 euros. This means that it costs around 1,200 euros more than before. The basic Q2 (30 TFSI) will follow later in the year for around 25,000 euros, with a similar surcharge. At the start, Audi is offering the “Edition One” with a sporty look package. The manufacturer has not yet given any prices for this equipment or other engine variants.
