AW Poll: getting money out of the wall with your phone, do you want it at your bank?

At the bank ABN AMRO you can now withdraw money from the payment terminal without using a debit card. You register with your smartphone and scan the QR code on the machine. What do you think of that system? Would you prefer as soon as possible, or is there a better solution?

Withdraw money with your phone

Contactless payment has become the norm for many people in shops, but will we soon no longer need a debit card to get money out of the wall? This is already a reality for AMBN AMRO customers, because it works with the Geldmaat payment terminal and the Mobile Banking app.

A QR code will appear on the Geldmaat payment terminal that you can scan with the app. Then you log in on your phone with a code or biometric methods such as the fingerprint scanner or facial recognition. Finally, you only have to enter the desired amount via the machine, and you will receive the cash. You can withdraw up to 500 euros per week with this method. For the time being, it is only possible at ABN AMRO, and therefore not at other banks, even though ING and Rabobank are also partners of Geldmaat.

Geldmaat wants to improve the function even further next year, because then you will be able to connect via the NFC chip of your phone if you just tap the machine. At Rabobank, they are more interested in such an application. “As soon as we notice that there is interest from our customers, we will definitely do something with it. At the moment the function only works for Mastercard customers, and we would like such a function for cash withdrawal without debit card for Visa customers as well. This will probably be in the form of a more user-friendly solution via NFC,” explains Eric Lagerwey, spokesperson for Rabobank.
