BabelMap is a small portable program that displays the complete repertoire of the Unicode characters. Unicode is the international standard for the encoding of graphic characters and symbols in binary codes. Just say the way the computer displays all the characters in the world. The first version was recorded in 1991, and characters from exotic and ancient languages were constantly added over the years. The most recent edition, version 13.0, was expanded again in March 2020 with four notebooks and 55 emoji.

Search function

The Unicode standard assigns a number to each character, which we call a code point. Such a code point is written as U + xxxx. For example, the at sign is U + 0040. At the moment there is no program that can display all 137,000 existing characters. BabelMap checks the installed fonts and chooses the one containing the most characters for the selected character code table. The program has a search function to quickly find specific characters. You can save special characters that you use often in the bookmark list, which can contain 32 characters.

With the right mouse button you zoom in on a character.

Hieroglyphs and emoji

In the box Select Unicode Block browse through the different notebooks. Do you want Transport and Map Symbols, Emoticons, Hebrew or Egyptian hieroglyphs? The characters you find here can be exported to the clipboard to transfer them from there to your own text. The tool can even export decimal or hexadecimal character codes, so you can use them in XML or HTML documents.

Unicode blocks

The main window has special buttons for quickly scrolling through Unicode blocks. If you right click on a character, you can zoom in and view it in a pop-up window. Via the menu at the top you can use color coding to filter characters in different ways. For example, you can assign a color code per Unicode version. Then you see how different characters were added to the standard over time.

You can store BabelMap in the System Tray.

Conclusion

If you regularly need special characters, then this is recommended. In addition to displaying the characters, it also allows you to copy the characters or a sequence of characters to the clipboard for use in any Unicode-ready program, such as Notepad ++.
