Chrome tip: this is how you quickly preview a website on Android

Do you sometimes have to open multiple web pages before you open the right site? Or are you looking for specific information via, for example, Google: there is a good chance that you will open many websites briefly to scan the information. Now you may still open the entire page for that: there is another way. We explain how in this article.

Website preview in Google Chrome

Opening multiple websites quickly leads to a chaos of loose – and presumably unusable – tabs in my Chrome browser. Often the tabs stay open for weeks. Afterwards I just close the tabs, without even checking if there was anything useful in them. Sometimes I don’t know why a tab was actually open, and sometimes I thought I’d ‘look at it later’, but never got around to it.

Fortunately, Chrome offers a solution for the tab collectors among us, as well as people who do research on their Android phone and need to scan a lot of information in a short time. You can see an example of a tab. The websites therefore do not open in a new tab, but appear directly as a slide-up window. The appearance of these tabs is very similar to the WebView browser in Android. Unlike that browser, in preview mode it is possible to close a previewed website with one swipe down.

Chrome has been offering the option to view tabs in this way for quite some time now. It is therefore not necessary to run the latest version of Google Chrome on Android, or even the beta. Of course you have to use the Chrome browser, which you can download from the Google Play Store via this link.

  1. Open the Chrome browser on Android
  2. hold a link you want to preview long press
  3. In the pop-up menu that opens, click View page

As indicated, you can close the tab by swiping down the top bar of the preview tab. You can also close the tab by clicking on the cross in the top left. If you want to open the tab just outside the preview mode, click on the arrow next to the cross in the top bar.
