Corona crisis clearly visible in traffic intensity

The impact of the measures against the spread of the corona virus is clearly visible in the number of traffic movements. There is a noticeable decrease in road traffic, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

The road has clearly slowed down last year, but especially in the first half of the year. This was especially noticeable on the weekends. At the end of March and the beginning of April, the weekend traffic was about 35 percent of ‘normal’. The second week of April was quietest during the week, when traffic was only half that of a year earlier. At the end of 2020 it was also quieter than normal, but not as quiet as with the ‘first wave’. At the end of last year, the traffic intensity during the week was around 80 percent compared to 2019, and at the weekend at roughly 70 percent.

The decline in the number of traffic movements was less pronounced for freight traffic. In the second week of April, freight traffic fell to slightly more than half of that in 2019 at the weekend. At the beginning of July, the intensity of freight traffic was almost comparable to 2019. Since then, freight traffic has fluctuated around the level of a year earlier.
