Dacia overtakes Citroën in France

Third place

Dacia Spring, Sandero, Duster and Jogger

Peugeot, Renault and Citroën have been in the top 3 in the French car sales lists for many years, but things were different in 2022. Dacia was one of the few brands to record sales growth in the country (+4.5 percent) last year, where the total car market shrank by 7.8 percent. With this, the brand conquers the third place.

Dacia’s French success is mainly due to the Sandero: no fewer than 64,293 new copies of that model found an owner in France in 2022. This makes it the second most popular model in France after – how could it be otherwise – the Peugeot 208 (88,812 units). The Clio is in third place with 64,012 sales. That model sold significantly better than the Sandero in 2021. With 58,880 units, the Citroën C3 is the number four in the country.

If you look at the total sales per brand, Peugeot was just number one in 2022 (245,608 sales). Renault is number two with 236,405 sales, Dacia is number three with 130,855. Citroën follows with 129,883 units and is just behind the net for third place.

Compare with 2021

In 2021, Peugeot, Renault, Citroën and Dacia still sold 285,929, 268,591, 161,883 and 125,204 cars respectively, making the brands good for the entire top 4. The top 3 of that year did considerably less in 2022 than in 2021, but not Dacia. The highest ranked non-French brand in 2021 was Volkswagen, with 105,299 sales. The only other brands to record a plus in France in 2022 are Alpine, Maserati and Toyota. The rest sold less than in the previous year.

Last year, of course, Dacia not only sold Sanderos in France, but also copies of the Duster, Spring and Jogger. The Duster signed for 31,648 units, the electric Spring for 18,326 units and the Jogger for 15,379 units. This puts those models in 9th, 18th and 27th place in their home country.

In the Netherlands, the Sandero is also the brand’s most popular model. The Duster does considerably less well here. The brand sold 1,850 and 1,057 copies of the two models in 2022 respectively. In between are the Spring and the Jogger with 1,417 and 1,249 cars sold, for a total of 5,616 new Dacias registered in the Netherlands last year. In the Netherlands, the brand has a market share of 1.8 percent. In France it is 8.6 percent.
