Dacia Spring ‘groundbreaking green’ EV

Praising Green NCAP

Dacia Spring

The Dacia Spring may be very modest among all other electric cars, but according to Green NCAP it is a groundbreaking car. The Spring really stands out when it comes to efficiency.

With its modest weight, size, price tag and power for an electric car, the Dacia Spring is quite the odd man out in EV land. The cheapest fully electric car in the Netherlands has so far managed to convince more than 1,800 Dutch people with it, according to the current sales figures. Who gets the Dacia Spring even more excited? The men and women of Green NCAP. This branch of NCAP rates cars on their environmental friendliness and the Spring manages to convince the jury more than any other EV.

In fact; it is said that the Dacia Spring ‘sets a new standard for the industry’. Green NCAP concludes: “Dacia has set itself the goal of creating a supermini that meets the needs of consumers in its design, but also the sustainability challenges of our planet. The result is a ‘green and environmentally friendly’ model, with which the company ahead of many other manufacturers when it comes to environmental impact.” What impressed me most is how efficiently the Spring uses its power. The Spring therefore not only receives five green stars, but also a 9.8 for energy efficiency. No car has ever scored this high on Green NCAP.

The fact that the efficiency is so impressive according to Green NCAP is not only due to the light weight of the Spring. After all, according to the researchers, relatively little power is lost from recharging to the electric motor. “89 percent of the energy drawn from the grid is available on the output side of the battery, indicating an efficient charging and discharging process.” Green NCAP came up with an average power consumption of 18.5 kWh/100 km at the Spring and an average driving range of 180 km. AutoWeek already discovered last summer that the Spring can be a lot more economical in warm weather.

Other winners

Other cars tested in the past year that impressed Green NCAP included the Tesla Model 3, Nio ET7, Renault Mégane E-Tech and Cupra Born. They all scored a 9.3 or higher in the field of energy efficiency. The Tesla Model 3 was the best after the Spring, with a 9.6. The Nio ET7 and Renault Mégane E-Tech achieved a 9.4, the Cupra Born a 9.3.
