New Year’s Eve did not go smoothly everywhere.
While many Dutch people happily do their best to start the new year in a pleasant way, there is always a group that thinks differently. They would rather start the new year by playing the vandal and making life difficult for emergency workers. We can start 2021 positively by reporting that it was relatively quiet at this turn of the year.
Where there was an increasing trend in the number of incidents over the past two years, this trend has now been halted. Of course we would not have expected otherwise, given the measures. There were about 30% fewer alarms last night than last year, it reports RD.
Unfortunately, a lockdown in combination with a fireworks ban could not prevent car fires throughout the country. In the region of The Hague, in Urk, in Den Bosch and in Utrecht, it was hit several times. The total number of car fires is not yet known, but in Utrecht alone there were around twenty. More expensive cars were not spared either: a Porsche Macan burned down in Nijmegen.
The fire brigade was hindered in their activities in various incidents. In Urk, the fire brigade turned around when they went to a car fire and it turned out to be unsafe. In some places the riot police had to be involved to allow the fire brigade to do their job.

Coincidentally, a Volkswagen Transporter went up in flames in our neighborhood in Maarssen. Although it is still unclear how that is possible. But it is absolutely insane that there are people who enjoy this. And if you also hinder the fire brigade, it is very sad for you. Like that movie of that Seat in this article, what’s wrong with you! Then you just have to be taken out of society.
