First electric car from Dacia: Mini-SUV is coming in 2021

Dacia electric car (2021): prices, dates, pictures, market launch

The fact that Dacia’s electric study is basically a Renault is not surprising. It is more important that the SUV becomes a Dacia: the cheapest “real car” with a battery.

The electric Renault K-ZE is not available in Europe

Each Bet: This electric study by the Romanian Renault brand Dacia would have rocked the canceled Geneva Motor Show 2020. The concept car named Spring Electric is a concrete announcement and not a dreamy outlook. The first electric car from Dacia will arrive in 2021. Basically it has long been there. The city SUV has been on the Chinese market with this body, slightly different drive system and Renault logo since 2019.

According to European understanding, the Dacia emblem fits this model better than the Renault rhombus. There are range records elsewhere, this is about the down-to-earth entry into electromobility. A solid 200 purely electric kilometers in what is potentially the cheapest electric car on the market.

Price: Dacia brings the cheapest “real” car with a plug

However, this classification requires a restriction. Sure, the prices of emission-free minimal concepts such as Citroën Ami or Renault Twizy will not undercut the electric Dacia. But there will be little competition at the same price among the electric vehicles with passenger car registration. It is currently difficult to stream below 20,000 euros. At least with two rows of seats, including a battery and before deduction of the electric subsidy. In any case, the direct competition from the electric mini-SUVs will not manage that. Kia e-Niro, Hyundai Kona Electric or Peugeot e-2008 are larger than this Dacia, but start clearly beyond 30,000 euros.

Dacia has not yet announced a price for its electric mini SUV. However, it is likely that the number begins with a one. A competitive price of 15,000 euros is speculated. Renault’s version of the model for China is even cheaper, it costs the equivalent of less than 10,000 euros there. In China, the model goes under the name City K-ZE (pronounced “City Kayzee”).

In China, the sister model Renault City K-ZE drives

Why the Asian Renault can cost less than the European Dacia? Taxes and subsidies are different in China. In addition, Dacia has to supplement an ESP and other safety technology in Europe. The base group of the models is basically the same. Dacia and Renault are based on an adapted version of the CMF-A platform. The substructure for the small car segment is adapted in the front area of the electric mini SUV. Renault uses a different concept for its most well-known group electric car, Zoe.

The closest technical relative is the Renault Twingo ZE with a rear-engined variant of the same platform. This is also used by the Smart fortwo EQ. In terms of drive technology, the electric Dacia should be close to this lively part of the subcompact segment. We expect an output in the range of 80 PS (58 kW) and a battery capacity of a little more than 20 kWh.

Electric Dacia: 200 kilometers range

In any case, that would be a plausible way to achieve the announced range of 200 kilometers (according to WLTP). With the strand of the Renault City K-ZE, the Dacia could also achieve this range by a hair’s breadth. But the manageable output of 44.8 PS (33 kW) and the meager 105 km / h top speed will not expect Dacia from performance-spoiled European customers. It is also likely that the models will not be made on the same belts. Not only because of the current tense health situation around the production site in Wuhan. The matter is a global project, stressed Renault since the first news about the electric mini SUV.

Dimensions: A mini SUV for the city

As much space as possible in a minimal area, that’s what draws in all urban spaces. Dacia does not yet provide detailed information on the length of the Spring Electric. After the cancellation of the Geneva Salon, there will be no chance to pace around the study with a tape measure. The similarity in shape and plastic planking suggests that the dimensions of the electric Renault would come out pretty exactly. So a length of 3.74 meters and a comparatively long wheelbase of around 2.4 meters.

300 liters of luggage fit in the trunk of the Renault sister model. So far, Dacia has only communicated the interior of the Spring Electric: The first small E-SUV will be a four-seater without a middle seat on the back seat. There is just as little with the Renault twin.

New Dacia front: beautiful lights for everyone

Dacia fans can rest assured that despite all the technical similarities to the Renault, Dacia’s electric car will visually match the current models of the Romanians. The indicated underrun protection in Duster style is considered to be set. In details, the study anticipates other changes: In future, all Dacia LED headlights will be equipped with the light strip shown. It is more important that the brand’s claim remains unchanged in the future. Namely, that Dacia models could rock an automobile fair, primarily on the basis of price and free from any hype. Dacia will do everything in its power to offer the cheapest electric mini SUV in Europe in addition to the cheapest small car and the cheapest SUV.
