Geely and Baidu will build autonomous electric cars

Geely and Baidu are joining forces to produce (partly) autonomous electric cars. It is a partnership that has been secretly in the air for some time.

Chinese tech giant Baidu and Geely, parent company of Volvo and Polestar, are joining forces. The aim is to work on ‘new mobility’ in a company to be set up jointly. More specifically, we speak of electric cars that (partly) autonomously pass through traffic. “Baidu will provide intelligent driving capabilities for the new company’s cars, (…) Geely will contribute its expertise in car design and construction,” the two parties explain.

Very concrete goals have not yet been set, but it is an important step towards an interesting future for both companies. Baidu has for years been looking for a way to implement its technology on a large scale in cars and of course Geely can put the expertise of a large tech company to good use in preparing its cars for an autonomous future.

The two companies are no strangers to each other. More than two years ago it became known that Geely’s daughter brand Volvo and Baidu were going to work together. Then with similar goals, although after that it remained silent about this collaboration. It seems that these newly announced plans for the future are an extension and realization of that previously sealed partnership. Previously, there was a short-lived collaboration between Baidu and BMW.
