Google Meet meeting on your TV: that’s how it works

Google Meet

Now that we all work from home more and are also dependent on all kinds of services and hardware that we normally would not use that often, it is nice to see that those products are provided with updates that make life a bit easier. Take, for example, the recently released update for Google Meet.

The communication application, with which you can make video calls with colleagues and friends in a group, now offers support for Google Chromecast. With Chromecast it is possible to send content from your smartphone, laptop or tablet to televisions, media players and smart displays, so that you can watch or listen to it on them. That is now also possible with Google Meet, so you can hold the meeting from the couch.

Google has created this change mainly for schools and universities, so that children and teachers can communicate comfortably with each other. This way you can also talk to other students relaxed from the couch about the projects you are carrying out together.

Cast Google Meet to your TV

When you cast Google Meet to your television, you can still use the microphone and camera of your smartphone, tablet or computer to see the others. You can just see them on the big screen in the living room or bedroom. What do you need for this? Firstly, a TV or media player with Chromecast on board or a Google Chromecast in the HDMI port. In addition, of course, a computer or smartphone and a Google account with which everything comes together nicely.

In terms of Chromecast models, you think of the Chromecast Ultra (such as that of Google Stadia) and otherwise the second and current generation models of the dongle. You should also keep in mind that Android TV models with built-in Chromecast functions may differ in terms of experience.

If you have done all the preparations, you can actually start casting right away. You can do this before or during the meeting. You need the latest version of the Google Chrome browser for this. You open the meeting in Chrome on your computer and look for the ‘cast this meeting’ button during or before the conversation.

Then you choose the target and in this case it is the TV, the Chromecast or a separate media player. If you also want to stop casting again, click on the three dots on your computer at the bottom right. There you will find the stop button. Then the image is no longer shared.
