How to set up Safari extensions in macOS Monterey

You can now download extensions or so-called add-ons for every popular browser, including Safari. This allows you to further optimize the use of your browser. How do you set up these Safari extensions?

“Safari extensions give your browser superpowers. You can block ads, find the best prices and discounts while shopping, save web pages to read offline, and more,” Apple explains. In short: there is a wide range of useful tools available that you can download from the App Store.

Installing Safari extensions is easy. Make sure your Mac is updated to macOS Monterey 12 and open the Safari app. In the menu bar at the top left, choose Safari and then on Safari extensions† This will open the App Store and you will immediately see an overview of the available add-ons. In some cases, you can also download an extension for your browser from the developer’s website, but this is not considered “safe” by Apple.

Did you find one? Click on the Downloadbutton or the price and click the same button again to purchase or install the add-on. After the extension has been downloaded, you may still need to enable it in some cases. You do this by again in the browser for Safari to choose and then go to Preferences to go.

Manage extensions

If you have downloaded multiple browser tools, you can use them in the same Extensions-manage menu. Select one and click Remove installation if you no longer want to use an extension. If you have downloaded an add-on via another app, you can also remove this app immediately. If you select an extension, you also have the option to change some settings, for example mwith regard to your privacy and the access that extensions have.

The browser tools are automatically updated through the Mac App Store. There you can also update them manually. You can find updates in the menu on the left of the Mac App Store.
