How to use Search Tools in Windows 10

Search

If your PC’s hard drive or SSD becomes full, you can of course use third-party software to find the files that take up the most space on the drive. But actually, Windows 10 Explorer has everything on board to search for large files in the Search Tools tab. Only in certain cases you have to conjure this tool first.

Step 1: Search Tools

‘s built-in search function Windows 10 is better than ever and has a set of advanced filters to find files according to certain criteria. The tool you need for that is the tab Search tools. To do this, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the drive or folder where you want to search for large files. Then click on the search field at the top right. In the ideal world, a new tab will now appear: Search tools. Unfortunately, the Windows world isn’t ideal. If you have performed the Windows 10 1909 update, you will no longer see this tab when you click in the search box. To bring it up anyway, type something in the search box and press Enter. We hope Microsoft fixes this bug soon. Anyway, from now on you can adjust the search. In addition, from then on you can use the search filters that are our focus here.

At the top you don’t see the tab, below you do because we filled in something and pressed Enter.

Step 2: Filters

In this new tab we are mainly concerned with the filter Size. Under this button are seven filters: Blank (0 KB), Very Small (0 – 16 KB), Small (16 – 1 MB), Medium (1 MB – 126 MB), Large (128 MB – 1 GB), Very Large (1 GB – 4 GB) , Giant (>4 GB). For example by gigantic the command . will appear in the search box size:giant big and Windows Explorer will search for all files larger than 4 GB.

In the ‘Search Tools’ tab you will find seven size filters.

Step 3: Own sizes

In addition to the suggested standard sizes, you can also set your own quantities. For example, if you want to search for files that are larger than 200 MB, then type in the search box size:>200MB. Of course, you must first clear the search box by clicking the X sign to avoid combining searches.

You can also use the filter to search for custom quantities.
