Hyperion presents mobile hydrogen filling station

Also for BEVs

Hyperion Hyper:Fuel XF-7 mobile hydrogen refueling station

The American company Hyperion draws the curtain on a very special invention: a mobile filling station that can supply not only hydrogen-powered cars, but also electric cars with a battery with fresh energy. It is called the Hyper:Fuel XF-7 and should be on the market in the United States next year.

Maybe the name Hyperion rings a bell with you. In 2020 it presented a supercar with a fuel cell and a driving range of more than 1,600 km: the XP-1. We can now report that it will be more than 2,000 horsepower, although Hyperion remains silent about the future – and possible production – of the clean super sportsman.

That doesn’t stop Hyperion from coming up with its next news: the Hyper:Fuel XF-7. This is a mobile filling station – or charging station, if you like – that can provide up to two FCEVs (fuel cell electric cars) at the same time with a full charge of hydrogen within 5 minutes. In addition, the XF-7 can also charge battery electric cars with a DC charger.

The mobile filling station is able to store large amounts of energy at an extremely high energy density. This makes it possible to charge multiple vehicles with the XF-7, although Hyperion does not yet specify after how many charges the cake will be finished. The mobile station is equipped with solar panels, although they will undoubtedly not be the most important tool to prepare the XF-7 for use at any desired location. It is still unclear how the station itself mainly obtains its energy.

Aerospace engineering

The Hyper:Fuel uses technologies from space travel for its unprecedented capabilities. Hyperion reportedly wants to sell them in the United States next year, where it will also produce the XF-7. This is done at Hyperion’s new plant in Columbus, Ohio, which the company is now building.

If you’re inclined to take the possibility of a future for the XF-7 with a grain of salt, know that Hyperion is by no means a one-hit wonder. The company was founded in 2011 and has been developing hydrogen cells ever since. The fact that the Hyperion XP-1 has not yet appeared on the market could also be due to the fact that it is only a vehicle for developing and testing fuel cell technology. Hyperion itself does not yet give a definite answer about this.
