iMovie (finally) supports the iPhone X screen

It took a while, but iMovie has gotten support for the iPhone X’s longer screen. Moreover, the app now works a lot smoother thanks to Metal.

iPhone X update to iMovie

iMovie is one of the last apps from Apple itself that is now suitable for the iPhone X. Thanks to the update, the app runs across the entire screen, without the black bars along the side that you saw before the update. That is handy, because more screen space is nice if you work on a touchscreen.

With the update, all popular apps from Apple itself are finally suitable for the iPhone X. Still, iPhone X users still lack support for popular apps. For example, Google’s Inbox app still does not work with the longer screen. Also apps such as Nest, Adobe apps and Buienradar still cannot deal with the screen size of the X.

The latest update for iMovie also adds support for Metal, Apple’s API for graphics performance. Metal allows apps to communicate faster with graphics hardware, resulting in better performance. Editing videos in 4K is therefore no problem on the iPhone X, with this update.
