iOS 13 tip: Here’s how to set a reading goal in the Books app

A good intention of many people is to read books more often instead of watching Netflix. The Books app in iOS 13 will help you with this. This is how you set Reading Goals.

The new function helps you to gain insight into your reading behavior. By default, this timer is set to five minutes per day, but you can adjust this number to your own liking. This is how you set Reading Goals:

  1. Open the Books app on your iPhone or iPad with iOS 13 / iPadOS 13;
  2. Go to the ‘I’m reading now’ tab and tap ‘Read today’;
  3. Here is how much you have already browsed today. Tap on ‘Adjust goal’ to change the number;
  4. You can now indicate how many minutes you want to read every day.

You can also share the Reading Goal here with friends via social media. It is not possible to challenge others to a competition, as is possible with the Activity app. The Reading Goal keeps track of how much you read and listen to books every day. The goals are not new, however. True book enthusiasts know the function of Kobo and other e-readers, for example.

How many books do you want to read?

Do you prefer setting an annual ‘book goal’ instead of a daily timer? That is also possible. Follow the steps above to view your daily reading goal, after which you will see in the overview how many books you have already read. Tap on ‘Edit Goal’ again to change your goal for this year. By default, Apple assumes that you read three books per year.

Important in advance: Reading targets are available from iOS 13 and iPadOS 13. The new software version for iPhones and iPads will be released this fall, but you can already try out the update. Check out our article on how to install the iOS 13 beta for detailed instructions.
