iPhone 13 Pro’s 120Hz refresh rate doesn’t work for all apps by default

The iPhone 13 Pro has a brand new ProMotion display with a 120Hz refresh rate. That’s great, but it doesn’t work by default for all apps. Fortunately, Apple has a solution.

Apps must ‘unlock’ 120Hz refresh rate themselves

The new iPhone 13 Pro finally features a ProMotion screen with a fast refresh rate. This is immediately visible when browsing iOS or viewing a website. In some apps, however, the screen still seems to work with the ‘old’ 60Hz. Fortunately, the solution to this is simple.

According to a new developer article from Apple, developers should “unlock” the 120Hz refresh rate for their apps themselves. This can be done in the coding of an app. In addition, iOS 15 has a bug that makes the animations of some apps feel slower. Apple says this will be fixed soon with a software update.

The iPad Pro has had a ProMotion screen since 2017. For this, the smooth screen works by default for all apps. This is probably due to the large battery in the iPad Pro, which suffers less from the 120Hz refresh rate. With the iPhone, Apple is taking a more cautious approach.

Major changes take time

It is not surprising that the ProMotion screen does not work optimally during the first week that the iPhone 13 Pro is available. After the arrival of the iPhone 6 in 2014, apps also had to adapt to the larger screens. This happened again in 2017, when the iPhone X suddenly lost its home button and the aspect ratio changed.

So there is a good chance that in a few weeks we will no longer be bothered by anything. Major apps such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube have been working very smoothly since day one. Do you have an iPhone 13 Pro? Let us know in the comments what you think of the new 120Hz screen.
