Buying a new mattress is a science in itself. Stiftung Warentest and Öko-Test bring light into the darkness – and regularly test foam, latex and pocket spring core mattresses. Here you can find out which are the best mattresses.

A good and fitting mattress has a positive effect on your night’s sleep and helps to prevent health problems such as back or hip pain. The function of the mattress is to support the spine during sleep, so that the spine stays in its natural position even while you are asleep and your muscles are not active.

The mattress should not only suit your sleeping habits, your physique and your weight. Since you spend around a third of your life in bed and in direct contact with the mattress, it is important that it is free of harmful substances.

By the way: Experts advise not to wait too long before investing in a new mattress. With good care, high-quality mattresses can last up to fourteen years, according to TÜV Rheinland. For hygienic reasons, mattresses should not be used for longer periods.

Mattresses tested by Stiftung Warentest

Stiftung Warentest continuously tests mattresses. The most recent results are from September 2022, here ten new models were checked for their lying properties, durability, pollution, odor nuisance, declaration, supine or lateral position, etc.

Test winners in the current test are the Breckle Weida Pro Body** (grade 2.0) and the Badenia Irisette Büsum** (grade 2.2). “All body types lie well on them in a supine and lateral position,” was the verdict of the examiners.

Which is the best mattress?

In our overview, we present you with the test winners for the various mattress types – from foam to latex to innerspring mattresses. To do this, we took a closer look at the results from 2021 and 2022.

Its core consists of a specific mattress foam, eg visco foam, cold foam or comfort foam. Foam mattresses are not suitable for people who sweat a lot at night. Since they are easy to clean and air out, they are a good choice for allergy sufferers.

    Test: Eco-mattresses without harmful substances

The testers from Stiftung Warentest checked the covers, fine upholstery and core for harmful substances such as pesticides, plasticizers, flame retardants and organotin compounds. The indoor air pollution, the odor nuisance and the disposal also played a role in the test.

Eco-mattresses in the test: sleep free from harmful substances

We spend an average of seven to eight hours – and thus almost a third of our lives – in bed. It is not only important that our spine rests gently, but also that the mattress we lie on is free of toxins and pollutants. • The test result is an important point of reference – but your personal preferences also count. The best way to find out what material the mattress of your choice should be made of is to do a test in the store.
    • Anyone who sweats easily at night is well advised to use a spring core mattress, while those who tend to shiver should opt for a foam or latex mattress.
    • The tests by Stiftung Warentest show that the manufacturer’s hardness specifications are often incorrect. In the laboratory, the testers determined some other values. Stiftung Warentest advises: “The degree of firmness of a mattress does not affect its supporting properties. A soft mattress can give the spine just as much support as a hard one.” This means: You can choose the firmness of the bed according to your preference and how comfortable you are.
    • The tests show that expensive does not automatically mean good. Some good mattresses are available for around 100 euros.

    Care tips for your mattress

    1. In order to be able to use your mattress for as long as possible, you should take good care of it. You can prevent mold growth by regularly turning or airing the mattress. Then you don’t have to dispose of your mattress too early.
