Mazda shows CX-60: plug-in hybrid with more than 300 hp

Mazda CX-60

Mazda is getting ready to unveil the new CX-60, an all-new SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Mazda now shares a detail photo that confirms the earlier expectations. However, the brand also comes with the first information about the powertrain.

It was already known that Mazda will expand its European model range with the CX-60 and later the CX-80. On March 8, Mazda pulls the curtain on the CX-60, which will be placed on a new – basically rear-wheel drive – platform. In the hierarchy, the CX-60 comes above the CX-5. This is apparent from the first data released by Mazda about the plug-in hybrid powertrain of the CX-60. The Japanese are not yet very generous with information, but already report that it is an atmospheric 2.5-liter four-in-line petrol engine that, combined with an electric motor, delivers a system power of ‘more than 300 hp’. The CX-60 is Mazda’s first plug-in hybrid.

The teaser photo that Mazda shows mainly confirms the previously leaked images of the CX-60 (photos 2 and 3). The photo shows the striking headlight unit of the CX-60. It consists of two parts: in a branch of the grille is a small LED strip, which flows into the actual headlights. We’ll probably have to wait until the actual reveal on March 8 for footage of the back of the CX-60.

It is not yet clear whether Mazda will also supply the previously announced six-in-line on the European variant of the CX-60. Mazda only mentions the plug-in hybrid in the press release. It is also conceivable that Mazda will supply the six-cylinder engine in some countries, but will forgo the power source in countries with an unfavorable tax climate for large engines. After the unveiling of the CX-60, Mazda will probably not wait too long with the CX-80, which will have three rows of seats.
