Mercedes recalls S-class for production error

Mercedes-Benz is starting a recall for the new S-class as a precaution. On some specimens, the inner track rods for the steering mechanism are too short. Worldwide, this would concern about 1,400 potentially affected cars.

The recall has been initiated because in some cases the steering inner tie rods are too short. The German Business Insider received a letter from Mercedes-Benz to owners of a new S-class. It reportedly states that owners must ‘immediately’ make an appointment at the workshop to have their car checked. The track rods that are too short can kink or tear during the life of the vehicle, which may eventually lead to steering problems. According to Mercedes-Benz, the problem came to light after a report from the supplier.

A spokesman for Mercedes-Benz reports to the same source that up to 1,400 cars worldwide must be recalled. Mercedes-Benz Netherlands confirms to Techzle that also in the Netherlands certain copies of the new S-class must return to the dealer to check the track rods and replace them if necessary. The spokesperson did not specify an exact number, but it is expected that only ‘in a few copies’ the track rods will actually need to be replaced. The relevant owners will be notified automatically.
