MG brings plug-in hybrid HS to the Netherlands!

The Chinese MG has been active in our country with the electric ZS EV since last year. That electric crossover will be joined by a larger electrified SUV: the HS! The HS will come to the Netherlands in the first quarter of next year.

MG Motor Europe is the European arm of the current MG, the brand that emerged from the remnants of the bankrupt British MG brand that operates under the wings of the Chinese giant SAIC. Last year, MG brought the ZS EV to Europe, an electric variant of the ZS that now has around 2,500 copies on the Dutch roads. The ZS EV will also be joined by the HS early next year in the Netherlands. Just like the ZS EV, the HS is an electrified model, although the HS coming to the Netherlands is a plug-in hybrid and not a fully electric car.

The HS is immediately recognizable as an SUV, which means that the design of the SUV also shows some design influences from Mazda, for example. Interestingly, MG Europe touts the car as a ‘spacious SUV’ for the C-segment. Prices and extensive specifications are not yet available, MG says it will be announced in December. MG has been selling the HS in China since 2018, which means that we can already record interesting information about those Chinese versions.

Dimensions

The HS is a 4.57 meter long, 1.88 meter wide and 1.66 meter high SUV with a 2.72 meter wheelbase. That makes it considerably longer than a car like the current Nissan Qashqai, which after all kicks the SUV to a length of ‘only’ 4.37 meters. Twenty centimeters shorter than the MG HS. With a length of 4.48 meters, a car like the Kia Sportage is also ten centimeters shorter than the MG HS. In terms of size, the MG HS fills the gap between the aforementioned SUVs and higher positioned models such as the Renault Koleos.

Plug-in

In China and in the United Kingdom, the MG HS is available with a 169 hp 1.5-liter large blown four-cylinder petrol engine and with a 231 hp also blown 2.0. Both flavors are therefore not coming to the Netherlands, although MG does bring a plug-in hybrid variant of the model to our country. In these countries there is also a plug-in hybrid version of the HS: the eHS. That eHS has a blown 1.5 developed by General Motors under the hood. The 1.490 cc 1.5 is just like in the regular petrol version of the MG HS 169 hp and 250 Nm strong and is also linked to a 122 hp electric motor. The system power is 258 hp and thus thunders the plug-in hybrid HS, aided by a ten-speed automatic transmission, to a speed of 100 km / h in about 7 seconds. The always front-wheel drive eHS is always linked to an automatic transmission. More interesting is the battery pack, which in the Chinese eHS has a capacity of 16.6 kWh and according to the not very accurate Chinese measuring cycle you should be able to travel 75 kilometers with it electrically. Should the European version of the plug-in hybrid MG HS also receive this powertrain, it will get a less optimistic electric range to its name in the WLTP cycle. In the United Kingdom, the plug-in hybrid HS scores an electric range of 52 kilometers. On to 2021!
