Need a holiday feeling? These films and series take you on a journey

Going on vacation is not an option for the time being. Your holiday pay goes on the bank, or is spent on odd jobs in and around the house, but how do you ensure that you still get a holiday feeling? You do that with these films and series.

Ibiza

We do not start with the very best film that Netflix has to offer in terms of quality, but one that has chosen a popular holiday destination of the Dutch as the stage: Ibiza. It offers a glimpse into the nightlife of Ibiza, because in this film we follow someone who goes to Ibiza with her friends, after a DJ who also happens to be very handsome. Highly recommended if you have ever visited Ibiza, because all kinds of memories will return.

These are the best series to binge watch on Netflix.

Human Planet

BBC’s Human Planet is a series that shows you how people live in other parts of the world. Not in the capitals, but in places that are very remote and therefore require adjustments. How far these adjustments can be, that is phenomenally portrayed in Human Planet.

Call Me By Your Name

This movie probably makes you consider taking a pool in the garden. Call Me By Your Name knows like no other that wonderfully peaceful summer feeling in France. Meanwhile, a very sensual story unfolds between 17-year-old Elio and considerably older Oliver, who also works for his father. An ultimate record of that wonderful, languid holiday feeling.

Tales by Light

If there is anything fun to do on vacation, it is taking pictures. There is just a little more space in your head for creativity and that is often reflected in the most beautiful snapshots. Plus, take a look at last year’s holiday photos: that feeling will immediately bubble up again. The Australian docus series Tales by Light follows photographers in making their life’s work. You see the most beautiful countries in the world at their best. Tales by Light has a serious undertone, but also offers a glimpse into a different culture. A very well recorded view.

Fuck the Love

This is not a high-quality film, but if there is a Dutch film that manages to convey a tropical island feeling, then it is Fuck de Liefde. There is a lot of drama in it, but the pictures you see of Curacao make you forget all those soap-like situations immediately.

An Idiot Abroad

If you don’t just want to enjoy everything other cultures have to offer, but also want to laugh, An Idiot Abroad is the ideal series. Karl Pilkington is sent out by comedians Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant to visit all kinds of wonders of the world. He makes the most enviable trips and gives you a good look into the head of someone who is not necessarily easily convinced.

These are the best movies and series on Amazon Prime Video.

Wet Hot American Summer

Although we have less camp culture in the Netherlands than in America, almost everyone has been to a camp with a school or sports association. Wet Hot American Summer is a movie, but also a series on Netflix, in which you can enjoy vague situations and especially a lot of humor at such an American children’s camp. It may not be a beach vacation, but a very relaxing time away from everyday life, deep in one of America’s many national parks.

Dirty Dancing

This film has so many iconic moments, great quotes and fantastic moves that even if it was set in a Dutch pasture, it still managed to convey the story of a blistering holiday love. Dirty Dancing takes you from start to finish on a family vacation at a resort in America. A resort where dancing is very sexy, but where a few strict parents are present to throw a spanner in the works. If only it works out …

Restaurants on the Edge

While this series revolves around rescuing restaurants struggling for a variety of reasons, Restaurants on the Edge lets you dream away by the Mediterranean and learn about Hong Kong’s food scene. What makes Restaurants on the Edge so fantastic is really all but the subject matter: it is simply portrayed so beautifully that you have just completely gone if you looked at it.

Moonrise Kingdom

As an extension of One Hot American Summer, there is Moonrise Kingdom. A hugely successful film that will make you happy anyway. It tells a very funny story about children at a summer camp. At least, actually it is mainly about two children who are no longer present at the summer camp. They are in love and they have left, but where? A special adventure follows and takes you completely from the first second into the brain of a child on the one hand, and that real camp feeling on the other.

Conan without Borders

Conan is a bit rude, but in his series Conan without Borders humorously zooms in on the culture per country. In fact, he does not actually look for the unknown: he chooses to do exactly what a country is known for. And if we are very honest, that is great fun. You don’t go to Rome without seeing the Colosseum, and Conan delves into the culture behind those very famous activities that characterize a particular country.

To Catch a Thief

If you’re more interested in older movies, this Alfred Hitchcock classic is for you. In this film you see Grace Kelly and Cary Grant having a hot summer together. Stolen, flirted and meanwhile a cat-and-mouse game brilliantly portrayed by one of the world’s greatest directors ever.

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations

For no less than twelve seasons, chef Anthony Bourdain went in search of the essence of food culture in different places around the world. Bourdain’s style is of course nice and rude and arrogant, but he knows how to convey how the food in a certain region tastes and how it originated. Food is so important when you are traveling. Because yes, we don’t go all the way to Spain to get frikandels and croquettes after all, right?

Good trip!
