New Ford Ranger on the road

The Ford Ranger is already ten years old and that is reason for Ford to prepare a successor. We now get to see them for the first time.

The Ford Ranger is a bit of an odd man out at Ford. Although pickups are not available in the US, copies of the relatively modest size of the Ranger are less popular. In addition, the Ranger would nevertheless be a bit too close to the F-150 in the American market. Nevertheless, Ford decided to market the current Ranger, which has been available outside the US for many years (and also here in the Netherlands), in 2019 there as well. He probably will not last long there and we can also expect repayment, because a completely new generation is coming.

At 11 years old, the Ranger is already quite old and especially in South America, Africa and parts of Asia there is a need for a refresher due to the considerable demand for the Ranger. Although the camouflage makes a detailed look at the new Ranger difficult, it is already somewhat apparent that the Ranger gets a somewhat more American front. Presumably he is more the trick with his big brother, the F-150. That should probably also make the pick-up a bit more appealing for the home market. The base will also be more American; after all, the current Ranger was created in collaboration with Mazda. With the new Ford does it all itself.

Ford of course still holds technical details firmly to the chest, but assume that the biturbo 2.3-EcoBoost four-cylinder will return to the Ranger on the international engine list. Here in the Netherlands, the Ranger is available with the 170 or 213 hp strong blown 2.0 and for the time being there seems no reason to think that this option will disappear. It is interesting that Volkswagen has come to the table for the Ranger because of its partnership with Ford. The successor to the Amarok will be the twin brother of the new Ranger, so we will undoubtedly get a first sign of life later this year. We do not expect the market launch before 2022.
