An all-new Nissan Qashqai is arriving. The brand is already revealing the specifications of the two new powertrains: the petrol engine with mild hybrid and the ‘e-Power’ hybrid without plug – which is actually a kind of electric car.

Next year, a new generation of Nissan Qashqai will be in Dutch showrooms. We still have to wait for the unveiling, but not for the information about the new powertrains.

First of all, the (improved) 1.3 DiG-T petrol engine is equipped with mild hybrid technology. The engine will be available with 103 or 117 hp power. The stronger of the two will also be available with four-wheel drive. A six-speed manual gearbox is part of the drivetrain as standard; with the 117 hp engine, a new Xtronic CVT automatic transmission is also available.

The compact electric motor of the mild hybrid system ’12V ALiS’ (Advanced Lithium-ion battery System) supports the petrol engine with additional pulling power of 6 Nm during acceleration. This ‘Torque Assist’ function, along with the CVT, reduces the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of the Qashqai. This is done, among other things, by switching off the fuel engine when braking and rolling to a standstill.

In fact, e-Power is a kind of electric powertrain. However, charging is not necessary.

The second new powertrain is a plug-less hybrid. However, the Nissan ‘e-Power’ hybrid technology has unique features: the combustion engine is only used to charge the battery and always runs at the most efficient speed. In fact, e-Power is a kind of electric powertrain – after all, the wheels of the Qashqai are only driven by the electric motor.

However, charging the high-voltage battery at a charging point is never necessary, the 154 hp 1.5 petrol engine ensures that. The system power of the Nissan Qashqai e-Power is 140 kW, or 188 hp; the torque is a maximum of 330 Nm.

Advantages of Nissan e-Power are energy efficiency, lower emissions and direct throttle response. The system offers three driving modes in the Qashqai, all three of which have an additional mode that recovers energy as soon as the accelerator pedal is released. The new generation crossover also benefits from the e-Pedal that we already know from the Nissan Leaf: starting, accelerating and braking with just the accelerator pedal. In the crawl mode this can also be used for parking maneuvers.
