“700,000 fewer cars due to war in Ukraine”

The war in Ukraine causes human suffering and also has a negative effect on various industries. This also applies to the European car industry. According to an analyst at the financial institution Wells Fargo, 700,000 fewer cars could be built in Europe this year.

There are no fewer than 17 factories in Ukraine where wiring harnesses are made for new cars. This makes Ukraine an important link for the European car industry. Only in Romania and Morocco are there more wire harness factories. Wells-Fargo analyst Colin Langan expects up to 700,000 fewer cars to be built in the first half of this year alone due to a shortage of wiring harnesses. For this reason, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, among others, are already producing fewer cars in their home country of Germany than before.

According to Automotive News, German supplier Leoni – which produces wire harnesses in Ukraine – is doing its best to increase wire harness production at other plants outside Ukraine, although it could take months to scale production elsewhere.
