in the He stays true to his heart with the Meriva: With its predecessor, which was retired in 2017, the Opel Crossland X is designed as a practical family transporter with manageable parking space requirements. The combination of SUV look and variable interior is popular. In Germany alone, the Crossland X won over around 23,000 new customers in 2019 (12th place in its segment). With the facelift, the name and appearance will change. He keeps his strengths.

Opel Crossland (2020) in brief:

  • 4.21 meter long mini SUV with the space of a minivan
  • Facelift comes with a new “Opel Vizor” (new grille)
  • Traction control “IntelliGrip” as an all-wheel drive replacement
  • For the first time sporty “GS-Line +” with certified ergonomic seats
  • Prices from around 18,500 euros. Start of delivery: beginning of 2021

The scheduled revision at the halfway point of the model cycle brings the crossover model initially a correction in the name. As with the new Mokka, Opel is canceling the X on the Crossland. In future, the model will only be called Opel Crossland. In addition to the name, the front apron in particular has changed: The Crossland has the new “Opel Vizor”, the revised brand design with a narrower, closed radiator grille. The sensors of modern driver assistants are hidden behind the smooth front of the grill. Opel changes nothing on the sheet metal itself, and the shape of the bonnet remains the same.

Not much new except for the front

Opel redesigned the underrun protection at the front and rear. The fog lights now shine in LEDs. There are also new chrome trim and revised rims in 16 or 17 inches. It quickly becomes clear that not much has changed apart from the revised front. With the assistance technology, for example, Opel sees little cause for improvement: the only new feature in the 2020 Crossland model year is the “IntelliGrip” traction control. Opel is taking over the system from its sister model, the Citroën C3 Aircross. This is a kind of all-wheel drive replacement: the system allows the selection of different profiles for controlling ESP and traction control (ASR). The Opel Crossland can be optimized for driving in snow, off-road or on sand. On a snowy road, the system brakes the spinning wheel and directs energy to the other wheel. In mud mode, more slip is allowed so that the wheels can remove the mud. The system prevents the wheels from digging in the sand. In addition, ESP and ASR can be switched off up to a speed of 50 km / h.

With the other assistants, Opel remains true to itself: the lane assist and traffic sign recognition are still standard in the mini crossover. In addition, customers can get a reversing camera with a panoramic view, an automatic parking assistant, a head-up display or a blind spot warning.

Nothing changes in the lighting technology either: Opel continues to offer adaptive LED headlights for a surcharge, but these do not require an elaborate matrix system. Opel could change the layout of the equipment lines in the future. At the same time as the new Opel Mokka, the basic halogen lamps may then be omitted. The sporty “GS-Line +” is definitely new. Inside are black 17-inch wheels, a black roof, Opel’s ergonomic seats with the “Healthy Back Campaign” (AGR) certificate as well as LED taillights and roof rails.

With the facelift, Opel is renaming the infotainment options, but not changing the basic layout. There is a simple radio called “Radio BT”. Above it is “Multimedia Radio”, an infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen. It offers full smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As before, the top version includes an 8-inch screen and a permanently installed navigation system. Various online services can be used via the OpelConnect telematics service.

Newly tuned chassis in the Opel SUV

The PSA Group, and thus Opel, is gradually sorting out the Crossland PF1 platform. The successor technology based on the new CMP platform is already in the Corsa and Mokka. Many features that are offered there are therefore denied to Crossland drivers. This also applies to electrified drives. At least the Opel engineers can lend a hand on the chassis of the long-legged crossover van: The Opel Crossland gets new springs and dampers at the front and rear, as well as a new set-up. Opel also designed the steering more sensitively.

Engines and prices

We do not expect new engines for the time being. So far, Opel has offered a 1.2-liter three-cylinder with 82 hp, 110 hp or 130 hp. There is also a 1.5-liter diesel with 102 hp or 120 hp. The model currently starts at 18,500 euros. The top version Ultimate with 130 PS and automatic costs just under 30,000 euros according to the price list. The prices of the facelift are likely to be in this range. Delivery is scheduled to start in early 2021.

Opel Crossland: strengths and weaknesses

When Opel started developing the Crossland in 2012, the brand was still part of the American GM group. The cooperation with the French PSA group offers the chance to develop the Meriva successor much cheaper than doing it on your own. The PSA Group took over Opel in 2017 – the Crossland X was launched in the same year. He shares his technology with the CitroënC3, Citroën C4 Cactus and the first Peugeot 2008.

The 4.21 meter long model combines the look of an SUV with the space of a minivan. Slidable rear seat, 520 liters trunk volume, up to 531 kilos payload: The Opel Crossland is above all practical. It also convinces with the overview in narrow old town streets. Also positive: the French three-cylinder engines are economical, agile and well insulated. The model also offers comfortable seats and many equipment options.

The chassis design has been one of the weaknesses so far: Before the facelift, the Opel appears soft and pliable. In addition, its susceptibility to wind bothers us. Early specimens can also suffer from teething troubles, such as fussy electronics and wobbly cathedral bearings.
