OPPO Air Glass and MariSilicon X official: new augmented reality glasses and NPU

OPPO has announced two new products at its INNO DAY 2021 event. These are OPPO’s first self-designed Imaging Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and augmented reality glasses.

MariSilicon X

MariSilicon X is the name of the NPU that OPPO has designed entirely itself. Built on 6nm process technology, the MariSilicon X will play a key role in photography and image processing in future OPPO phones. The NPU not only contains more computing power, but also has an optimized memory system. According to OPPO, this so-called Tera bps memory subsystem should ensure that the time required for copying data between storage and processing units is significantly reduced.

The MariSilicon X also includes bandwidth and memory architecture optimizations designed to reduce delays and power consumption. In addition, the NPU is able to apply 4K AI processing to RAW images. The MariSilicon X will be found in the new Find X series in the first quarter of 2022. With this NPU, these phones will include:

  • faster image processing
  • better dynamic range
  • record sharper 4K videos (even in poor lighting conditions)
  • a pro mode for the RGBW sensor
  • real-time RAW processing without quality loss

OPPO Air Glass is an augmented reality glasses

The Air Glass is OPPO’s first augmented reality glasses equipped with its own Spark Micro Projector and the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100. The Spark Micro Projector should provide clear, sharp content for both indoor and outdoor use. That content is projected and corresponds to the operation of a heads-up display (HUD).

Operation in 4 ways

The Air Glass can be controlled via touch, voice, head and hand movements, but also with the Smart Glass app on the OPPO Watch 2 and on any OPPO smartphone that has ColorOS 11 or higher. Once the OPPO Air Glass is paired with an OPPO Watch 2, you can use gestures to confirm, cancel or exchange cards. Head movements such as gently nodding or shaking the head will use the AR glasses to open and close notifications.

Various apps

OPPO includes apps such as Weather, Calendar, Health, Teleprompter, Translate and Navigation. Teleprompter allows text, such as speeches or notes, to be displayed as a reminder during presentations or meetings. With Translate, voice input from one user can be automatically translated into texts in the target language, and then immediately displayed on the other user’s Air Glass. This only works in Chinese-English for now. OPPO has also developed various apps for the AR glasses in collaboration with partners.

Lightweight and stylish

According to OPPO, the Air Glass has a lightweight, minimalist appearance: “Weighing about 30 grams, the OPPO Air Glass is one of the lightest AR glasses and can be worn just like regular glasses. It is a stylish and technical accessory. for everyday use, even without actually using it.”

The OPPO Air Glass is designed for a wide audience, including those who are nearsighted or farsighted. They can opt for the black full-frame design. The glasses are also available in a silver half-frame design. Both are available in two sizes and will hit the Chinese market in Q1. It is not known whether the AR glasses will also come to other countries.
