Osamu Suzuki (91) is stepping down as Suzuki CEO

The 91-year-old Osamu Suzuki will step down as president of Suzuki later this year. After an enormously long career with the brand, he will only have an advisory role from next summer.

Osamu Suzuki is somewhat like the Queen Elizabeth II of the automotive industry. Suzuki is one of the longest-serving top executives in the industry, if not the longest-serving. In 1958 he started working for the brand, which was not founded by the immediate family of Osamu, despite the same name. In the 1960s he worked his way up to senior management positions within Suzuki, eventually becoming president of the company in 1978. He held that position until a few years ago, after which his son Toshihiro became the new CEO.

Since then, Suzuki Sr. has remained as chairman of the board of directors, but the now very elderly Japanese has also left that position, reports Bloomberg. In June, according to current schedule, he will step down to a role as an advisor to the brand. Perhaps he has more time to enjoy his old age. However, there is a good chance that Suzuki will not just let go of its work. Despite competition from much larger brands, Suzuki continued to play a major role in the automotive world under his passionate rule. The brand managed to make a profit with compact models. Something that is largely attributed to the relative ‘economy’ of Osamu Suzuki.
