iDEAL in the Apple Store or not?
There is often a lack of clarity, especially about paying with iDEAL in the Apple Store. Sometimes you can pay with iDEAL at Apple, but in other cases not. And are iTunes gift cards also valid in physical stores? In short: there are plenty of questions. Below you can read how it works!
- Online Apple Store
- Apple Store app
- Physical Apple Store
- iTunes and App Store
Note: Apple Store, not an App Store This article is about the payment options in the Apple Store, where you can order physical products. It covers both the physical Apple Store and the online Apple Store. We have a separate article about iDEAL in the App Store for purchasing apps, games and more digital content.
Pay in the Apple Store (web)
You can pay with iDEAL in the online Apple Store on the web. It is one of the allowed three payment methods you can choose from:
- Credit card
Apple Pay (Mastercards only)
- Apple Store Gift Cards (not iTunes Gift Cards)
You can only use one payment method per order.
If you want to pay for an order with iDEAL, please indicate this at the checkout. You choose your bank and are then redirected to the iDEAL payment page of your bank, where you have to log in with your bank details. The amount will be charged as soon as you complete the order. It is no longer possible to refund the payment at that time. Once payment is successful, return to the Apple Store website and receive an order number and confirmation. iDEAL is a Dutch payment method, so you will not find it on foreign Apple Store shop pages.
The following banks are possible when paying with iDEAL in the Apple Store:
- ABN Amro Bank
- ASN Bank
- SNS Bank
- Region Bank
- Triodos Bank
- Van Lanschot
Long processing time
If you buy a product via iDEAL, you have to take into account that the processing time at Apple is somewhat longer. The order will not be placed until payment has been confirmed with Apple. This can take more than a few hours, which can be important if you’ve opted for in-store pickup. The product is then only ready as soon as your payment has been confirmed. So don’t go to the store too early and wait for the pick-up message.
If you want to pay by credit card, Apple will check with the card issuer whether all the information is correct. Apple is requesting a pre-authorization for all or part of the purchase amount. This amount is blocked during the processing of the order, which can be recognized as ‘reserved’ on your online account statement at your bank. Once your order has been shipped, the amount will be debited. If you canceled the order before shipping, it can take up to a month before the pre-authorization is canceled. This can therefore cause problems if you want to make a large purchase during that period.
You can also pay with Apple Pay at the online Apple Store, but only if you use a Mastercard card. Your regular ING, ABN AMRO or Rabobank Maestro or V-Pay card is not supported. This means that you can usually only pay with a credit card in Apple Pay in the Apple Store.
Apple Store Gift Cards
Apple Store gift cards can be redeemed in three places: in the online Apple Store, the app or the stores. You enter the code that is printed on the gift voucher. Gift cards can only be redeemed in the country of purchase. So you cannot go to a Belgian Apple Store with a Dutch voucher. You can redeem a maximum of 8 gift vouchers per purchase. You can also pay part of the amount with vouchers and the rest with credit or debit cards.
Pay in the Apple Store app
Unfortunately, it is not possible to pay with iDEAL in the Apple Store app. You can only pay there with Apple Pay, credit card or Apple Store gift cards.
Pay in the physical Apple Stores
In the physical Apple Stores, you can pay by credit card, debit card, cash and Apple Store gift cards. You can also pay with Apple Pay. It is therefore not possible to pay with iDEAL, which is logical because it is an online payment method.
VAT and invoices
You will receive an invoice from Apple by e-mail, stating the VAT. Apple applies the VAT rate in the country of purchase, so 21% in the Netherlands and Belgium. If you need a VAT receipt or want to buy something on behalf of a company, you can also contact the Apple Business experts. You can usually already work with the invoice that you receive with a normal order.
If you have ordered something online, you will receive an official invoice via e-mail within 2 to 3 working days after the order has been shipped. If that is not the case, you can manually look up the invoice in your account.
iTunes and App Store
In the App Store (and iTunes) you have much more choice of payment methods. You can use a credit card, but also store credit or additional payment methods. Since June 2018, it has been possible to pay with iDEAL in the App Store, while you can pay with Bancontact in Belgium. In China you can use payment methods such as Alipay, WeChat Pay and China UnionPay.
In many Western countries you can pay with PayPal in the App Store. If you use iTunes gift cards you can pay in many more ways: some online providers accept iDEAL, while you can pay in stores with Apple Pay, debit card or even cash. iTunes cards are only valid in the country of purchase and cannot be used in the Apple Store. Conversely, Apple Store coupons cannot be used in the App Store.
