Of the Peugeot 3008 is a compact SUV produced by the French car manufacturer Peugeot. The model has been available since autumn 2016, initially only with front-wheel drive. An all-wheel drive version with plug-in hybrid drive and electrified rear axle will follow in autumn 2019. In autumn 2020, after four years, Peugeot will present a comprehensive facelift of the Peugeot 3008. The SUV has a new front, new displays in the cockpit and revised assistants.

  • Peugeot redesigns successful compact SUV
  • New: front, cockpit, equipment, assistants
  • Only one diesel, but two plug-in hybrids
  • Market launch at the end of 2020

It went well for the Peugeot 3008 right from the start: a jury of European trade journalists chose the SUV newcomer as “Car of the Year” 2017 in its first full year of sales – as the first SUV ever. After that, the French PSA group, which Opel has owned since 2017, will benefit fully from the SUV boom: in 2019, Peugeot will sell almost 200,000 copies of the 3008 in Europe. Are just more popular VW Tiguan and Nissan Qashqai. The sister models are now on the platform of the Peugeot Peugeot 5008, Citroën C5 Aircross, DS 7 Crossback and Opel Grandland X.

The concept of the French: The Peugeot 3008 offers a spacious interior with moderate variability over a length of 4.45 meters. The SUV has an extravagant cockpit design with a decidedly digital appearance with a low-lying steering wheel. Those who sit in the back have enough space, nothing more. After all, the backrest is adjustable. The vote chooses Peugeot quickly, but not too dynamically – and therefore absolutely suitable for the city.

Peugeot 3008: this is new

For the facelift, the compact SUV will initially have a new radiator grille, new headlights and other aprons (bumpers). The front optics approximates the younger Peugeot 208 and 2008. The grill loses its frame, the headlights become wider and now always shine with LED technology. The LED rear lights are also given a new design.

In the cockpit, Peugeot limits itself to replacing the digital instrument cluster (12.3 inches) and the central touchscreen. The range of functions is similar to that of 2008 and now includes, for example, a 3D mode. As usual, the French have placed seven aluminum switches under the touchscreen, each of which controls the subject areas of the infotainment – such as radio, air conditioning, navigation system or voice control. That also means: To adjust the temperature, you have to keep typing on the touchscreen.

Peugeot 3008 engines: just a diesel

On the part of the petrol engines, Peugeot leaves the engine range unchanged. As before, there is a three-cylinder turbo with 130 hp and a four-cylinder turbo with 180 hp. Above it are the plug-in hybrid engines with 225 hp and front-wheel drive and with 300 hp and all-wheel drive. The system torque of the top version brings a powerful 520 Newton meters.

The diesel offer, however, is cutting down Peugeot. What remains is the weaker of the previous two variants with 130 hp and an optional six-speed manual gearbox or eight-speed automatic converter. The same transmission options apply to the basic petrol engine. All other engines, including the hybrids, are always automatic.

The plug-in hybrid versions of the Peugeot 3008 each have a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 13.2 kWh. You can charge single-phase with 3.7 kW at the household socket, for an extra charge with 7.4 kW at a wallbox or with up to 22 kW at a charging station. After the facelift, Peugeot specifies the electric range as 59 kilometers for the all-wheel-drive model or 56 kilometers for the front-wheel drive model – measured in the realistic WLTP cycle.

So the more powerful car continues to drive with the same amount of electricity. This is due to the fact that the all-wheel-drive model uses the electrified rear axle with a fixed ratio, especially in city traffic and at constant speed. Operated with pure rear-wheel drive, the hybrid system does not direct the drive energy through the converter transmission on the front axle. There are no conversion losses and consumption is reduced.

New assistants in the Peugeot 3008

In detail, the Peugeot 3008 has been technically improved. The LED headlights have a static cornering light function as well as a “fog mode” that makes the fog light superfluous. The LED lights at the stern will now flash sequentially. All models with automatic transmission have a drive mode switch as standard. This allows you to switch between normal, sport and eco. The system works in a similar way to the hybrid models, where it is already part of the standard equipment, especially on the steering and accelerator pedal characteristic. The Peugeot 3008 does not have an adaptive chassis.

The expanded range of assistants will in future include a night vision function that uses infrared technology to recognize living beings in front of the vehicle and display them graphically. Mercedes first offered this technology in Germany in 2005. It will debut at PSA in 2018 in the DS 7. The automatic cruise control system (ACC) keeps the car in the middle of the lane and – assuming an automatic transmission – can automatically brake to a standstill in a traffic jam and start again within three seconds. The autonomous emergency brake now also detects cyclists and works day and night at speeds between 5 and 140 km / h.

Equipment: New “Packs”

In addition to new leather and fabric options for the interior, Peugeot is also restructuring the equipment list for the 3008. The basic lines Active, Allure and GT complement suitable “packs” with equipment that is particularly popular. The “Active Pack”, for example, supplements the basic equipment with “Mirror Screen” smartphone connectivity, electrically folding exterior mirrors and a parking aid including a reversing camera. In the top GT version, the “pack” contributes, for example, the parking assistant, larger rims, the premium sound system from Focal and ergonomic seats.

Advantage Peugeot: With the preconfigured packages, the variety of variants that the manufacturer has to produce is reduced. So far, Peugeot has offered many additional equipment options for the 3008 as an individual option. That drives up production costs. The package solution reduces the complexity on the assembly line and thus the process costs in the plant.

Peugeot 3008 Facelift 2020: prices and market launch

Peugeot has not yet announced prices and dates for the market launch. This is not surprising, because the Corona crisis has mixed up the schedules for many manufacturers. We assume that the carefully redesigned SUV will be launched in 2020. Nobody at Peugeot wants to guarantee that: The Peugeot 3008 is assembled in the PSA main plant in Sochaux in northern France. Most recently, PSA struggled to bring the productivity of the factory back to the pre-lockdown level. According to French business newspapers, PSA is currently looking for around 1,000 interim workers to increase the daily output from 2,000 vehicles to 2,200 vehicles. The manufacturer wants to introduce an additional night shift for this.

Peugeot will probably raise the prices slightly in the course of the model refresh, which includes new, standard equipment. So far, Peugeot has not yet given any new prices. The French compact SUV currently starts at 28,415 euros. The cheapest diesel costs around 31,000 euros, the plug-in hybrids are available from 41,987 euros.
