The GTS is the Macan with a flashy training suit. We made a driving test of the powerful Porsche Macan GTS. Does the training suit fit the performance? Or is this badge a matter of appearance?
The Porsche Macan came back on the market a few years ago. That happened fairly carefully. We were in the middle of the battle over emissions and CO2. The Porsche Macan S that we drove in the driving test even took a while. This was mainly due to type approval. But we are a few years later. We can go a little crazy again. And so now the badge that is always wanted: here is the Porsche Macan GTS.
The looks of the Porsche Macan GTS
He looks fat doesn’t it? Satin Black 20 inch wheels RS Spyder design, 21 inch Sport Classic is an option. That the carriage is lower also helps. The Porsche Macan GTS is 15 mm lower as standard. This is thanks to the PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management). The calipers are also painted red.
Details in matte black can also be found in the front and rear bumper. The side blades are also black, with the letters GTS on it. Under the rear bumper we find four black exhaust trim pieces. They are screwed on a sports exhaust, by the way. For more noise, but that’s how we test it. The diffuser is also finished in black. The rear lights also have a new design. They are dark tinted, with four-point brake lights. The Porsche letters are also made black. Finally, the spoiler is also black.
The interior is also nice
Black aluminum details can be found in the interior. There is also a lot of sprinkling with GTS badges. The Porsche Macan GTS sports seats are eight-fold adjustable. The GTS badge can also be found on the headrest. As an option you can choose a package with details in red or chalk. The tachometer is also red or chalk. This too has a GTS logo. The belts and stitching are also available in red or chalk.
Less motor differences
The difference is smaller under the hood. The Porsche Macan GTS has a 2.9 V6 engine. Not the same 3.0 as in the Macan S, but the block that we know from the Audi RS4 and the Porsche Macan Turbo. The GTS has 20 hp extra power compared to the previous Porsche Macan GTS. The Macan S has 354 hp, 36 hp less. The block also responds faster than the previous generation according to Porsche. The turbos are placed between the cylinder banks. As a result, the turbos can wash up faster because the exhaust path to the turbos is shorter.
A total of 380 hp is available. The couple is also nice. 520 Nm can be dragged out of the block. At top you can reach 261 kilometers per hour. The sprint to a hundred? That can be broken in 4.7 counts with Sport Chrono.
The Sport Chrono package has a number of features. The Normal, Sport and Sport Plus driving modes speak for themselves. There is also the Individual mode, in which you can choose how strongly the Porsche Macan GTS reacts. The PSM (Porsche Stability Management) also has a Sport mode. If you choose this you can slide a little more and act crazy. However, the system continues to monitor whether it is not going too well.
Finally, we also have the Sport Response button. If you press this button (it is on the steering wheel), the car is fully focused. If you now go on gas, the Porsche Macan GTS gives everything for a maximum of 20 seconds. Handy during the catch-up campaign on that one mountain road. Or for quick insertion on the highway.
Driving the Porsche Macan GTS
Porsche places the Macan GTS between the Turbo and the Macan S. On paper this seems to be correct. In terms of equipment but also in terms of speed. Time to find out if it is really true in practice. After all, we would find out if that training suit was only visible in this Porsche Macan GTS driving test.
The 2.9 liter V6 depends strongly on the gas, especially if we put the car in Sport +. The car we are testing has air suspension. No superfluous luxury on the occasional moderate roads in southern Portugal. However, the suspension seems to be a bit on the soft side even in Sport +. There is not much role, but there is much movement. As a result, the carriage seems to be constantly moving. That is sometimes a bit annoying with a hundred percent flame, but it should not spoil the fun.
The GTS is wonderfully fast, but it certainly also adheres to the firmer cornering. The steering is very sharp and direct for a crossover or SUV. Unfortunately for Porsche, they let us drive a 718 GTS earlier today. Now I can not tell anything about that car by an embargo, but it does make something clear. Namely that a crossover even if it is built by Porsche, will never really send in a sporty way. Braking does the Porsche very well with the optional Porsche Surface Coated Brakes on our test car. They cost around € 3500. For a small € 9000 you have the carbon ceramic PCCB brakes.
The Porsche Macan GTS is a fantastic machine. Of course there is something to complain about in detail, but within its class this is a very good car. The question is whether that makes a difference, as 98% of the customer base will never drive this car 100% on a mountain road or circuit. It remains to me to give you the price of this machine. The Porsche Macan GTS is available from € 120,400. That is exclusive of Sport Chrono. That also excludes the thicker brakes. And excluding a few other details. The Porsche Macan GTS as we drove it in this driving test, costs around € 145,000 in the Netherlands.
Not necessary, but nice
A flashy training suit on a Macan, you don’t need that rationally. A Porsche Macan S is also incredibly fast. Is the Macan GTS much sportier than the regular Macan? That’s not too bad. Yes, he is certainly faster, drives a bit tighter. The figures prove that and if you pay attention you can even feel it. Nevertheless, I tend to say that you spend more on appearance. That your euros are mainly spent on looks, in addition to slightly better performance.
But the eye also wants something! The Macan GTS is not only a delicious, fast, compact SUV. He also just looks very fat. And people like that, people want to buy that. And so Porsche offers it. Because do you know what Porsche can do like no other? Make people believe they need something. And the person who sees a GTS next to a normal Macan probably wants the GTS now. He likes to buy the illusion of a sports car. But then packed in such a nice and practical, compact SUV. Those people can now go to their local Porsche Center to place an order. And they won’t regret it.
Is that Turbo review coming? 😏
