Renault stops developing diesel engines

Renault is gradually closing the R&D tap for diesel engines. The new chief engineer of the brand reports this. If the current diesels can no longer keep up, it will stop.

As a French brand, Renault has been busy with auto-igniters for many years. In France, diesel was the most popular fuel for decades. This is of course rapidly changing, now that diesel is falling out of favor in almost all of Europe. When ‘greening’ the fleet, Renault sees no profit in diesel engines at all in the relatively short term. This is evident from a statement by Gilles Le Borgne in an interview with Auto Infos.

Le Borgne, brand new Engineering Director at Renault, states that the current generation of Renault diesels is the last. Electrification of gasoline powertrains is seen as the only future of the combustion engine: “We will keep diesels in the catalog, but we are not developing new ones. After 2025, if we are to comply with the regulations, all combustion vehicles will be hybridized to varying degrees. are heading towards the end of diesel, ”said the Frenchman.

Renault is not the first brand to come up with such firm statements about self-igniters. For example, we heard earlier that Honda will no longer offer diesels in Europe next year. Such a plan also came to light at Mitsubishi two years ago. However, there is a chance that Renault will continue to use diesel engines for its commercial vehicles, or will purchase them from other manufacturers after phasing out its own power sources.
