This program encrypts files before you copy them to the cloud. The software offers support for commonly used cloud services, such as OneDrive, Dropbox and Google Drive. At the time of writing, about 30 services are supported. You must create an account before use, but as a home user you can then use the service free of charge. The servers are based in Germany and are therefore subject to European law. In combination with a cloud provider that operates from the United States, this provides an extra layer of security. After all, it is not self-evident that American government services can just view the files. The degree of encryption is determined by the subscription that you enter into, but there is also a free subscription.

Boxcryptor tries to work as quietly as possible in practice. The program automatically analyzes which cloud services you use. These are then added to a virtual ‘Boxcryptor’ disk. Files you add to this are automatically encrypted. When opening them, they are automatically made accessible. The service applies the principle zero knowledge: The creators also don’t have access to passwords. This also means that they cannot access data in an emergency.
