Road pricing costs workers hundreds of euros per month

Higher compensation?

In 2030 it should really happen: road pricing. The CNV union is afraid that working Dutch people will be severely affected by this and that hundreds of euros will be lost every month.

The current government has set the goal of introducing pay-as-you-go, i.e. road pricing, by 2030. According to a calculation by the trade union CNV, this could cost millions of people hundreds of euros more per month. “The CNV is in favor of reducing CO2 emissions, but employees should not pay the sky-high bill for this”, says chairman Piet Fortuin. The rates for road pricing are not yet clear. According to CNV, the full bill will be released “soon”. “If you drive an average car, you will soon pay an extra €300 per month in fuel costs,” the union thinks. “The higher the government’s CO2 ambition, the more workers pay extra.”

The trade union therefore advocates compensation for employees in the form of an additional tax-free allowance of around 30 cents per kilometer that the employer can pay. “The employer also benefits from this: employees change jobs less quickly,” says Fortuin. “In addition, it prevents people from switching to another sector where they have to travel less or can work from home more. In healthcare, for example, we cannot miss anyone.”
