Seat starts production of respirators

In the meantime, various industries have switched to making tools that can be used in the corona crisis. The car industry is mainly hooking up and now Seat has also started building respirators.

Worldwide, factory halls are set up in no time for the production of mouth masks, respiratory equipment or cleaning equipment. Normal operations are halted, but the production of such much-needed things is flourishing. In Europe, several Formula 1 teams have already started producing respirators, and Ford is now building such devices in the US. Seat, which is in the midst of the crisis in the corona-stricken Spain, is now also going to build respirators.

In the past few weeks, 150 employees of various companies have set to work out the most promising of 13 prototypes. The ‘winning’ version is now extensively tested for approval for use in hospitals. Production takes place at the Seat factory in Martorell, in the hall where parts for the Seat Leon are normally built. That hall was transformed in one week. Seat has brought people from all corners of its factory together in this department to produce the respirators. The heart of the machine is the wiper motor of the Seat Leon (last photo). This ensures the revolutions, which in turn are converted via various gears into the pumping movement on the air bellows.

How many of these devices are being built and over what period is not entirely clear. Due to the relative simplicity of the device, significant numbers are likely to be involved. These can be used well in Spain and who knows, this design and working method may also be adopted by other factories in Europe of the Volkswagen Group.
