Shell wants to use nuclear energy for the production of hydrogen and is entering into a partnership with NuScale Power, a company that wants to build small nuclear power plants in the United States for this purpose.

In various industries people are paying more and more attention to the application of hydrogen. More and more car manufacturers are also taking hydrogen seriously, but using hydrogen as an energy carrier is by no means a widespread concept. Shell believes in hydrogen and wants to use energy from small nuclear power plants to produce hydrogen.

Shell has signed an agreement with NuScale Power, a company that wants to build small nuclear power plants in the United States. NuScale Power’s smaller reactors are of course cheaper to produce than large nuclear power plants. In addition, the small nuclear power plants would pose less of a threat in the event of a ‘nuclear disaster’. However, it will take some time before the small power stations are there. NuScale’s first small nuclear reactor is unlikely to be ready before 2030. No CO2 is released during the generation of energy in nuclear power plants, which makes nuclear energy an interesting concept.
