Soundbar with or without subwoofer: which one should you buy?

Some soundbars come with an extra speaker, or a subwoofer that delivers just a little more bass tones in the music. Subwoofers can already be built into the soundbar or can be supplied as separate speakers. But is such a separate subwoofer really necessary for an epic movie night?

A good soundbar should offer the complete package on its own: crystal clear sound, with attention to detail and natural sounds. It should not be necessary to connect the soundbar to other speakers or a subwoofer. A soundbar can be perfectly capable of getting deep bass tones under your film or music. A subwoofer must therefore really add value by taking those action scenes in your favorite Hollywood film to the next level.

Doesn’t have to get better

But not all subwoofers can do that and some can even ruin your home cinema experience. For example, because the tones are too deep or because there is a delay in the sound, so that you see an explosion on the screen before you hear it. That is of course very disturbing.

Explosion of sound?

In which situations you need a soundbar with a subwoofer actually depends on your own wishes and priorities. Do you want an explosion of sound in your living room and do you want to feel the bass tones? Then, in theory, a subwoofer can contribute to a full sound experience when watching movies or listening to music with low bass tones. If you simply do not want to spend too much money on a good soundbar, then a subwoofer may be a waste of money and it is better to invest the full amount in the soundbar itself.

Logistics

Also keep in mind that you must have the space to store a separate subwoofer. Small living rooms can quickly fill up with equipment and a soundbar is a compact solution, but if you buy a separate subwoofer, you will run into this again. The advantage is that a subwoofer is usually wireless and you only have to connect it to the socket. This makes it a little easier to put the subwoofer out of sight.

Even if your house or apartment is fairly noisy, a separate subwoofer may not be such a good idea. Music and movies can be quite loud, so you have the neighbors on the doorstep more often than you want.
