Test Hyundai Ioniq 5, BMW iX3 and Audi Q4 E-Tron: which electric SUV has the greatest range?

What question do you ask when you are going to buy or lease an electric SUV: What does it cost? Quickly followed by the second question: what is the range? We test the range of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, BMW iX3 and Audi Q4 E-Tron.

Test Hyundai Ioniq 5, BMW iX3 and Audi Q4 E-Tron: which electric SUV has the greatest range?

This post is a fragment of a much larger test in Auto Review 11. In it we assess all aspects of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, BMW iX3 and Audi Q4 E-Tron. Here and now we focus on the range.

Battery capacity: Hyundai Ioniq 5 has the smallest

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 4WD has the smallest battery: 72.6 kWh. The BMW iX3 has a net capacity of 74.0 kWh and the Audi Q4 E-Tron 50 quattro has 76.7 kWh at your disposal. So the Ioniq 5 starts with a tiny backlog.

Power consumption: BMW iX3 is the most economical

The BMW iX3 is not the fastest, but it is the most economical of the electric trio. Per 100 kilometers an average of 19.4 kWh passes through and then there is also a section of highway in the kilometer mix. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 only needs a little more power: 20.1 kWh/100 km. The Audi Q4 E-Tron has to recharge 21.6 kWh after driving 100 kilometers. The electric SUV with the largest battery also happens to have the highest power consumption.

Range: Hyundai Ioniq 5 reaches 361 kilometers

Take the net capacity of a battery and divide that by the real power consumption and you get a good idea of the total range:

  1. 381 kilometers for the BMW iX3
  2. 361 kilometers for the Hyundai Ioniq 5 4WD
  3. 354 kilometers for the Audi Q4 E-Tron 50 quattro

Fast charging: 220 kW with Ioniq 5

Speaking of charging: the Hyundai is lord and master in this area. The Audi has a charging capacity of 125 kW, the BMW goes up to 150 kW and the Ioniq 5 draws no less than 220 kW from the fast charger. You don’t have to do anything special for that, because all three brands have joined the Ionity fast charging network and those charging stations go up to 350 kW. If we charge the electric SUVs there side by side, the Ioniq 5 goes from 10 to 80 percent battery charge in just 18 minutes. The Q4 E-Tron and the iX3 are then only half full…

Conclusion

Of these three, the BMW iX3 is the electric SUV with the largest range: 381 kilometers. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 4WD is second with 361 kilometers. It has a fractionally smaller battery and slightly higher power consumption than the BMW.

The Audi Q4 E-Tron 50 quattro is not very economical, but it does carry a lot of battery cells. So it still comes 354 kilometers on a charge of current and that is comparable to the Ioniq 5.
