TEST: the Hyundai Bayon is more spacious and tighter than the Mazda CX-3 and Peugeot 2008

The new Hyundai Bayon already left a strong impression when we compared it with the Opel Crossland and the Volkswagen T-Cross. However, he failed to win the test. We give it a second chance against the Mazda CX-3 and the Peugeot 2008. Which compact SUV offers the finest and most spacious interior?

The basic version of the Hyundai Bayon 1.0 T-GDI costs 21,695 euros. But for a little more luxury, we would at least opt for the Comfort version. There is a price tag of at least 23,695 euros. The test car is a Comfort Smart, which is in the showroom for 24,695 euros. It has digital instruments and navigation on board as standard. The Mazda CX-3 is only available from stock and costs 25,990 euros in the basic version. You have the 130 hp Peugeot 2008 for no less than 28,160 euros.

From the outside, the Bayon is the smallest

‘It must come from the length or the breadth’, according to a somewhat sour, old Dutch proverb. If that wisdom still counts, then the cheaper Hyundai must be smaller than its opponents. And sure enough, when you check the length, it’s immediately bingo! The Hyundai Bayon is only 4.18 meters long, while the Mazda CX-3 from bumper to bumper is more than 4.27 meters long. The Peugeot 2008 is slightly longer at 4.30 meters.

Interior Bayon, CX-3 and 2008

But when we put our laser equipment to work in the interior, those extra centimeters seem to have disappeared like snow in the sun for the Japanese and the French. Because while the Hyundai lends itself perfectly to weekend trips with a family of four, the rear passengers in the Mazda have to settle for limited headroom. Also with its interior width at shoulder height, the CX-3 shows itself the lesser of the Bayon. Nor is the 2008 built to carry ice hockey players and other broad-shouldered players. In contrast, the headroom and legroom are of an acceptable level.

Which compact SUV has the largest trunk?

The competition from the Bayon is repacking itself with the contents of the trunk, because it fits more than the 321 to 1205 liters of the Hyundai. In the Mazda you can lose 350 to 1260 liters, the Peugeot is the trunk champion with 405 to 1467 liters.

Getting used to operating the Peugeot 2008

We have few complaints about the beautiful, minimalist design and finish of the Mazda interior. The operation also does not give rise to furrowed eyebrows. The Peugeot, on the other hand, evokes mixed reactions. There is little wrong with the materials used and the finish and details such as the aluminum colored ‘piano keys’ and the 3D speedometer look chic.

Unfortunately, the operation in the Peugeot is less obvious than in the Mazda, although we are now used to the ieniemienie steering wheel. For those who still feel uncertain during the first kilometers in 2008, it is good to know that there is already a large arsenal of safety systems available from the Active version. This at least partly saves the occupants from problems if the driver pays too much attention to the buttons and screens and not enough to the traffic.

Little surprising Bayon

The Bayon also has a lot to offer in terms of safety, while the operation is very intuitive, just like with the Mazda. But unlike the Japanese, the Koreans have not managed to combine this with an original design. The Bayon interior is as surprising as the number 1 of the Top 2000 and as bright as a misty Christmas.
