That’s how economical the Volkswagen Up is in practice

Fuel economy worth an exclamation mark?

Volkswagen Up buying guide

It’s a well-known story, the A segment is dying out. According to tradition, compact, economical petrol cars are no longer profitable for manufacturers. The Volkswagen Up, star of this story, is only available from stock at the time of writing. What fuel consumption can you count on if you buy such a stock car or buy a second-hand Up? The AutoWeek Consumption Monitor provides insight.

Before Volkswagen pulled the plug on the model, the compact Up was a great success. Volkswagen sold about 95,000 of them in the Netherlands alone. The car is equipped with simple technology and always has a three-cylinder under the hood. You can enter with a 1.0-liter with 60 hp, the same block is also available with 75 hp. For a short time, the 1.0 TSI was delivered with 90 turbo hp, an engine that was increased to 115 hp in the Up GTI. In addition, there were the Eco Up with a natural gas tank and an electric e-Up. In this article we look at the turboless petrol variants with 60 and 75 hp.

Average consumption Up 60 hp

We find no fewer than 61 copies of the Volkswagen Up with a 60 hp engine in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor. On average, the drivers drive this car 5.3 liters per 100 kilometers. So they burn a liter of petrol every 19.1 kilometers.

Of course there are outliers up and down. For example, the most economical driver has already driven almost 60,000 km with a consumption of 4.17 liters per 100 kilometers. This 1 in 24 is very close to the manufacturer’s specification for this car, 1 in 24.4. The owner does indicate that he consciously drives economically.

At the bottom of the Consumption Monitor we find an owner who claims to drive sporty. This driving style results in a consumption of 6.38 liters per 100 kilometers over a distance of more than 45,000 kilometers. Given the driving style, this 1 to 15.7 seems by no means unreasonable.

Consume Up! 75 hp

Based on the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor, the Up with 75 hp is considerably rarer. We find twelve copies, which record an average consumption of 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers. A difference that is bigger than the factory leads you to believe. The 75 hp variant should consume 4.2 l/100 km compared to 4.4 l/100 km for the 60 hp version. It seems that the more powerful engine attracts owners with a heavier right foot, who actually use the power.

If fuel consumption is important to you, the Volkswagen Up with 60 hp seems a sensible choice, although the economical driver will also conjure up neat values from the 75 hp version. The Up is a lot more economical than the Opel Karl and also leaves the Kia Picanto behind. However, he has to admit his superior in the Mitsubishi Space Star and Hyundai i10.
