The best tools for Windows 10

Boss on your own Windows computer: HOSTS file under your own management

Which tools for Windows 10 should not be missing on your PC? We list the best tools for you.

10AppsManager

Comes clean installed Windows 10 already with a large number of default apps. Some think this is an excellent service from Microsoft, others see it as pure meddling. One can continue to enjoy, the other is served by the tool at his beck and call 10AppsManager. Before you start this tool, it is good to create a restore point. That actually applies to using all the utilities that go deep into the operating system.

When 10AppsManager is started, you immediately see what the intention is. Not all necessary Microsoft apps are shown, from 3D Builder to Xbox. Messaging and Skype and Solitaire are also in the list of Microsoft apps to remove. Throwing away saves storage space and the start menu is also mucked up a bit

For the gluttons among us there is the button Remove All to uninstall all Microsoft apps at once. But you don’t have to let it get that far, because why not just throw away the Microsoft apps that you don’t use or that annoy you? It works extremely simple: you click on the icon of the unwanted app, agree and the Microsoft app is gone. Fortunately, there is also the option to use the button Reinstall have all Microsoft apps reinstalled. This tool is simple and effective, that is the conclusion.

You click, agree and the app is gone.

privatezilla

We also know the Privatezilla tool as Spydish, but that aside. Go to the webpage for the latest version of Privatezilla and don’t forget to do an update check right after running. You never know. It becomes clear when you start the program for the first time that you always want to work with the latest version of Privatezilla. Windows 10 regularly gets an upgrade and so Privatezilla (albeit always slightly behind the scenes) has to upgrade!

You really only use Privatezilla to find out how Windows 10 is privacy-technically set up. You do that as follows. First place a check mark in the top left for the option Privacy. Click the button at the bottom of the screen analysis. You are probably shocked by the amount of privacy settings that are not configured. Through Start, Settings, System and Privacy you can fix the necessary privacy leaks. Then check Privatezilla again to see if your measures are taking effect.

Another section you may want to consult is App Permissions. This will tell you what the apps installed within Windows 10 are allowed to do. Being able to automatically request your location data is perhaps the least sensitive action. Being able to secretly use the microphone and the camera is already a lot more sensitive.

And so there are more privacy leaks that the apps (sometimes of unknown origin) could make use of. Privatezilla is going to tell you which points can be tightened and then you use the Settings of Windows 10 to make that neat.

Here’s what Privatezilla reports about the privacy settings of a Windows 10 computer that the user believes has a locked operating system.

ControlUWP

On this webpage you will find the utility ControlUWP. It concerns an extension to the control panel and the settings of Windows 10. That immediately sets the right tone: more options to adjust Windows 10 to your own liking. ControlUWP initially gives you the feeling of being in Windows 10’s settings. There is indeed a great resemblance, but if you look further, you will see options that the settings do not have by default, such as Debloat. You use this option to install all unwanted Microsoft apps. You can even have OneDrive removed.

One special feature worth mentioning is System & Storage Sense. This makes it possible to reclaim unnecessary space. We are talking about storage space on the C partition that Windows 10 does not really need. Interesting to keep in mind in case you run out of space again.

You will also be happy with the section Network & Internet. Anyone who uses the settings and the control panel knows how tortuous the road is to the right network tools. Using Network & Internet you will arrive almost immediately at the network spots where you need to be. One and so on applies here, because ControlUWP is chock full of clever elephant paths that take you to the often hidden settings of Windows 10.

With this option you get rid of all unwanted components, even OneDrive.

icaros

The Icaros utility was created by Tabibito Technology. It can be found left and right on the internet, including here: www.tiny.cc/icaros. Especially the multimedia tinkerers benefit from the use of Icaros. Because by cleverly combining some Windows Explorer extensions, it has been possible to provide the icons (and the properties) of video and audio files with extra functionality.

This is how you get when you use the Thumbnailing of Icaros, you can see handy thumbnails for (video) files that are not supported by the Windows Explorer by default. With the added slowdown of being able to skip black-and-white frames (which is often the case at the beginning of a video file) in order to show something useful.

The function Properties you use to make Windows Explorer a bit smarter in using the properties of audio and video. Think about being able to show you useful information, such as the length of the multimedia file and the performing artist.

Furthermore, we need the section Tools Don’t forget, this will make it possible to clear the thumbnail cache and restart Windows Explorer. These two actions come in handy if you want to properly reset the Windows Explorer after setting up Icaros differently. So you can continue with a clean slate. And it may have escaped your notice, but Icaros can also thumbnail epub files. So you immediately take that with you!

You can extend Windows Explorer’s thumbnail view feature to include file types that are not minimized by default.

Win10 All Settings

Windows 10 settings are not always easy to find. If you recognize this, then the tool Win10 All Settings exactly the tool you are looking for. Win10 All Settings is not much in itself: it is an option in the system tray of Windows 10. But what an option!

If you right-click the Win10 All Settings icon, a context menu will appear that becomes your signpost within the tooling landscape of Windows 10. You use a number of (important) menu options. With Classic Personalization you can quickly change the graphical interface (the experience) of Windows 10. Normally you will be busy with that with the registry editor.

The God Fashion of Windows 10 has already been discussed in Techzle several times. This allows you to use a selection window with which you can directly access all more than two hundred options. Those options are divided into convenient categories. Control Panel is a very complete submenu that takes you to the system tools of the control panel.

Admin Tools are the more in-depth system tools that normally require you to use the Control Panel or the Windows key+X. So not anymore. With Windows Settings you come directly to the (main) categories of the settings of Windows 10. That saves a few clicks.

Options are the options of Win10 All Settings itself. Pay special attention to the option Clicked Item, because with that you can set what should happen when you click the Win10 All Settings icon (in the system tray) with the left mouse button. And finally there is Tools. In fact, this is no more than a reference to some other utilities from the makers of this Win10 All Settings. Use it to your advantage!

With God Mode you use a selection window with which you can directly access all more than two hundred options.
