These are the best free video calling apps

The corona crisis has forced many people to work from home, and currently video calling apps are widely used to keep in touch with colleagues, family or friends. We discuss three good options.

In the list, we have included apps that specifically focus on video conferencing. Many apps are already free to use, but due to the current situation, various app builders have decided to offer premium features, which you normally have to pay for, for free.

Zoom

Zoom has become one of the most famous video conferencing apps in recent weeks, mainly because of its ease of use. The app builders have mainly developed Zoom for business use, but the free basic version is ideal for conversations outside of work. Due to the restrictions in the free version, you should go for the premium version if you also want to use Zoom for your work. In the free version you can only start a meeting with a maximum of two people and you can not talk longer than 40 minutes. In the premium version, you can invite up to 100 people to a video conference. Zoom was recently discredited because of the necessary security risks.

Skype Meet Now

Skype has been extremely popular for one-to-one video calls since 2003 and recently for multi-person conversations. Within the Skype app you will now find the option on the left side of the screen Meet Now. It is not entirely clear with how many people you can make video calls at the same time. According to Skype, this depends on the device and operating system on which you run Skype. It is best to download the app directly, but if you are not waiting for it (for example, because you expect to make only a few calls), you can also start a conference call in your browser by unique link as an invitation to your conversation partners. Nobody needs to log in to Skype or download the program, while you have all the functions at your disposal.

Cisco Webex

Webex, the collaboration platform of network manufacturer Cisco, already serves 130 million people worldwide every month to work together remotely. The program is primarily intended for business use, hence the focus on security: all traffic that flows through the Webex cloud is encrypted by default. Very safe. The free version of the program is normally quite extensive, but because of the current crisis, Cisco has expanded the free options a bit. This means that you can now make video calls with 100 instead of 50 participants at the same time. A 40-minute call limit has also been lifted.

With these three options you can certainly manage. Within Zoom you have some annoying restrictions in the free version of the tool and you may also run into the necessary security risks. The free versions of Skype and Cisco Webex do not have such restrictions. For video conferences with more than fifty participants, you end up at Webex, especially if you do not want to pay for it.
