These car brands are no longer getting CarPlay – and here’s why

Are you a big fan of CarPlay? Then there is bad news, because a large parent company is banning CarPlay from some car brands.

General Motors: no more CarPlay in certain car brands

Parent company General Motors (GM) has announced that new cars will no longer support Apple’s CarPlay. Instead, the company will work with Google to create a replacement for CarPlay. The new cars then have Google Maps and the Google Assistant installed as standard.

General Motors is behind car brands such as Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac. Previously, Opel was also part of GM, but GM sold that brand to Peugeot Citroën in 2017. Car brands produced from 2024 will no longer receive support for CarPlay, starting with the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer.

Collect more data without CarPlay

The parent company is moving away from CarPlay in order to gain better insight into the data of all cars. With the data from Google, GM wants to map out more clearly how consumers drive and when they charge their cars, for example. According to GM, it is less easy to collect this data with CarPlay.

The new operating system of the cars must work without a mobile phone. According to GM, this was also an important reason to no longer use CarPlay in some car brands. After all, if you want to use Apple’s car operating system, you still need an iPhone, sometimes even with a charging cable. In the future, this will no longer be necessary for new cars produced by GM.

CarPlay is still coming to petrol and diesel cars

Google’s new operating system will only be available for new GM electric cars for the time being. Gasoline and diesel cars will still receive support for CarPlay. Do you currently have a General Motors car with CarPlay support? Don’t worry, because CarPlay will continue to work in your car after 2024.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Apple is working on a new generation of CarPlay. This new version should allow CarPlay to take over all screens in your car and the software can be personalized much better. It is not yet known which car brands will or will not receive support for this new version of CarPlay.

With CarPlay 2.0 it will be possible to control the entire car, so you will soon be able to set the temperature in your car via CarPlay. Curious about all functions? Read more about CarPlay 2.0 here.
