We may now think of the Pixel Tablet from everything we hear about Google and tablets, but Google is also still a company that makes apps that work on other tablets too. For example, it has now announced that more than 20 of its own apps will be optimized for large screens. We have thanks to 9to5Google examples of the clock and the calculator.

Big screen apps

Google held a special session called ‘Designing apps for large screens’. That is also necessary, because if you now use a Google app on a tablet, it is mainly the regular phone app that has been ‘drawn’ a bit larger here and there. Sometimes some adjustments have been made to make the apps a little more tablet-friendly, but it’s not something to shout from the rooftops.

Whether you really want to shout from the rooftops that a clock looks different, we’ll leave that up to you, but Google has at least given a taste of what the Clock app will look like on tablets. Instead of in a bottom bar, the Clock now appears in the navigation panel on the left, much like the Photos app. This makes good use of the screen space for what the app can do.

Google Clock and Calculator

Google also showed what we can expect from the custom Calculator app. Better use is made of the space that is available on such a large screen and because of this you see a more extensive calculation history on the left. Very handy, because you can use them immediately if, for example, you first want to calculate how much 21 percent of the amount is, after which you add it again as VAT on your invoice. With many apps you have to remember what the outcome of your first calculation was, but with Calculator you see an even more extensive history on tablets than usual.

We’ve now seen what the Clock and Calculator apps will look like on tablets, but apps like Google Maps, Messages and YouTube Music are also getting this treatment.

Do you use the Google apps a lot on a tablet? Leave a comment what you think about the user-friendliness of those apps on your big screen.
