Thousands of Dutch Hyundai’s Kona Electric recalled

Hyundai is recalling 7,819 copies of the Kona Electric in the Netherlands due to a defect in the battery, the Dutch importer confirms to Techzle. This includes cars manufactured between September 29, 2017 and March 20, 2020. The recall is now in preparation.

Hyundai’s recall came to light last week. In fact, the recall means that almost all Kona’s Electric delivered in the Netherlands will have to be returned to the dealer. This concerns both the variant with the battery pack with a capacity of 39 kWh and that of 64 kWh. The detected defect in the battery can lead to a short circuit, which can start a fire. Hyundai does not specifically discuss what the problem is exactly, but in the Netherlands there are no accidents or fires that can be attributed to the production error in the Netherlands. A total of 25,546 Kona’s Electric are being recalled in Europe, so in the Netherlands this represents a whopping 30% of the recall.

Hyundai Netherlands is currently preparing the recall. The importer will ask affected owners to take their Kona Electric to the dealer so they can update the battery management system software and identify and correct anomalies in the high-voltage battery. The recall will – of course – not incur any costs for customers.
