Tip: Flip iPhone video in 3 ways

If you have made a video but it turns out to be lying on its side, it is possible to rotate it. That only has to be done via (small) detours.

Rotate video

When recording a video, the screen should rotate with how you hold the device. Yet this sometimes goes wrong. Then you have made a horizontal video which is shown vertically on iPhone. For example, you cannot easily share it with friends or upload it to Facebook or YouTube.

It is possible to turn the movie a quarter turn, although that function is not standard on the iPhone. There are three ways to make the adjustment, namely via iPhone, Mac or Windows.

1. Tilt iPhone video

There are a number of free apps that help you tilt videos on the iPhone. The best apps for that are Video Rotate & Flip and Video Rotate Free (download links below). You can install these apps for free. You simply upload your video in the app, choose how you want to tilt it and save the video. Of all the options in this article, this is the most convenient and will take you the least time.

2. Flip video on Mac

If you own a Mac (Book), you can use iMovie for free, which is installed on OS X by default. Follow these steps to rotate a video:

  1. Connect your iPhone to the Mac;
  2. Open iMovie;
  3. Click on ‘File> Import media’;
  4. Click under ‘Cameras’ on the left on your iPhone and then choose the relevant video clip;
  5. Choose ‘Import selection’;
  6. Select your video and click the crop icon above the preview (right);
  7. Two buttons will now appear with which you can rotate the video to the left or to the right;
  8. After rotating, click the share button in the top right and save the file.

3. Rotate iPhone video with Windows

The easiest way to get videos on your PC is to use iCloud. Go to icloud.com, select the video and press the download button at the top right of the screen (the cloud with the down arrow).

  1. Rotating a video is easy with a program like VLC Media Player.
  2. Open the video via ‘Media> Open file’;
  3. Go to ‘Tools> Effects and filters’;
  4. Select ‘Video Effects’ and then the ‘Geometry’ tab;
  5. Click on ‘Transform’ here and choose exactly how you want to rotate the video;
  6. If you are satisfied, click on close;
  7. After rotating the video, go to ‘Media> Convert and Save’ to save the file to the computer.
