Tip: This is how you determine who can (not) add you to group conversations in WhatsApp

Have you ever been added to groups in WhatsApp without being asked (and possibly unwanted)? From now on you can do something about it. You just have to dive into the settings for it. That is how it works.

How to manage WhatsApp group invitations

The feature has been added via an update. It may take a few days for your WhatsApp version to be updated as the patch rolls out in phases. Are you running the latest version of the app? Then follow the directions below:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your iPhone;
  2. Go to the settings and choose ‘Account’;
  3. Tap on ‘Privacy’ and select ‘Groups’;
  4. Then indicate whether everyone, only saved phone numbers or all your contacts with the exception of a few people can add you;
  5. Confirm your choice.

Thanks to the new settings, you get more control over who can (not) add you to groups in WhatsApp. Is an administrator on the ‘blacklist’ still trying to add you? Then you will instead receive a personal invitation via an individual chat. You still have the choice to participate. The invitation automatically expires after three days and no longer works there.

The new feature is especially useful for people who are regularly added to all kinds of groups and are not interested in this. The measure is also intended to nip online bullying in the bud. In such cases, the bullied is continuously added to all kinds of WhatsApp groups by bullies, where they are harassed and abused, for example.
